Workers Removing Asbestos From School

Workers will remove pipe insulation containing asbestos from the crawl space of Lakeside Elementary School in Worley next week.

The insulation will be removed while students and teachers are on spring break, said Brian Primer, maintenance supervisor for the Plummer/Worley School District, in a news release.

The material is being removed as part of the school district’s asbestos management plan.

“We have had credentialed industrial hygienists monitor air quality in the building’s crawl space and throughout the building,” Primer said. “The levels of asbestos fibers are considerably lower than federal government standards.”

Primer said the asbestos should not pose any health problem to students or teachers.

Primer said only building maintenance personnel come into contact with the asbestos and it is monitored on a regular basis.

The district also will sample the air after the asbestos is removed, following EPA requirements.
