Rogers Keeps Season Alive By Beating Ev

The long and short of it allowed Rogers to continue its baseball season.

The Pirates eliminated East Valley 4-3 in eight innings Tuesday during a Greater Spokane League sixth-place tiebreaker at Gonzaga Prep.

Rogers knotted the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning with the long ball - a two-run home run by Thomas Gest. The winning run scored when John Dobyns walked, stole second base and moved around on two passed balls. The telling play, with two out, was a short passed ball to the edge of the grass.

Winner Nick Scott (6-3) pitched a four-hitter, striking out nine and walking two. EV finished 10-11 in its first GSL season.

Rogers (9-10), the No. 6 seed, will open District 8 4A play at 1 p.m. Friday at Avista Stadium against No. 3 Ferris (14-6). No. 4 Central Valley (13-6) follows at 3:45 p.m. against No. 5 Mead (11-9). Both games are loser-out.

Kevin Schmidt’s RBI single to center in the seventh lifted Medical Lake (15-5) to a 12-11 win over visiting Deer Park in a District 7 2A tournament opener that eliminated the Stags (4-17). DP scored three in its seventh, high-lighted by Shawn Henry’s two-run triple. Matt Hodgson homered for ML, and Nathan Bowlen went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. The game had two rain delays. ML, the Great Northern League’s No. 3 seed, plays at No. 2 Lakeside (15-5) at 4 p.m. today… . Also in the league playoffs, Riverside’s game at Chewelah was suspended by rain and will be resumed today. The winner was originally scheduled to play top-seeded Pullman (16-4) today. That game haS been moved to Thursday.

Adam Sumpter (6-0) struck out six and allowed one hit in five-plus innings, leading Touchet (18-3) to a 10-1 win over visiting LaCrosse-Washtucna in an opener of the District 9 B tournament. Steve Alexenko had three RBIs and Todd Slater went 3 for 3 for the Indians. Touchet plays Whitman County champion Colton (17-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Walla Walla. L-W (11-9) was eliminated… . The other tournament opener, Waitsburg at Garfield-Palouse, was rained out and rescheduled for today.

Girls golf

Ferris junior Lani Elston shot an even-par 36 to take the lead after the rain-shortened first round of the District 8 4A tournament at Downriver Golf Course. Thunderstorms forced tourney organizers to cancel the final nine holes and increase the number of players who made the cut. Thirty-three will advance to Thursday’s 18-hole, state-qualifying round at Esmeralda. Ferris’ five scoring golfers averaged 40.2 strokes and finished in the top 11. Ferris senior Jaime Seefried and Lewis and Clark sophomore Sarah Bassett enter the final round two strokes behind Elston. Ferris senior Gina Hoal and Gonzaga Prep sophomore Katie Brophy were another shot back, at 39. G-Prep is in second place, averaging 44.2.

Boys golf

Medical Lake senior Joey Lawrence shot a 7-over-par 79 at Hangman Valley Golf Course to lead the GNL’s state qualifiers from the District 7 2A tournament. Lawrence, who fired a 78 at The Fairways last week, finished the 36-hole tournament at 157, three strokes ahead of Pullman’s Ryan Bidle. Also advancing to the May 22-23 State 2A tournament in Blaine were: Gary Hentges and Payton Norvell of Chewelah, and Brent Harvey and Jake Morris of Pullman. Chewelah edged Pullman 52-49 for the district team title.

Track and field

Pullman’s boys and girls finished the GNL season with 6-0 records with wins over visiting Medical Lake. For Pullman’s boys, J.D. Morscheck won the 100 and 200 meters, John Cassleman won both hurdles, and both ran on the winning 400 relay team. Sara Sheridan won the 100, then anchored the winning 400 and 800 relays to lead Pullman’s girls. Robert Miller won the 1,600 and 3,200 for ML’s boys. Adrian Traylor of the ML girls won the discus and shot put. Both ML teams finished 1-5.

Boys soccer

Mid-Valley No. 3 Selah defeated host West Valley 3-1 in the Region IV 3A tournament. No details were reported. Selah moves on to play M-V No. 1 Hanford on Thursday. WV (10-7-2) was eliminated… . Also in the tournament, West Valley (Yakima) defeated Prosser 8-0 in Yakima. The Rams (18-1) play at Frontier League No. 1 Cheney (11-4-2) on Thursday afternoon.

Softball

Deer Park’s GNL doubleheader at Pullman was suspended by rain and is scheduled to resume today.
