The Coeur d’Alene Vikings found a unique way to fall into the losers bracket at the State A-1 softball tournament in Idaho Falls on Friday.
Eagle scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a passed ball on what should have been an inning-ending strikeout.
Blake Hoorelbeke fanned Sara Hunn, but the ball got by catcher Stephanie Ferro, allowing Regina Scribner to score for a 1-0 victory.
The Vikings (25-4), knocked Highland out of the winners bracket, with a 6-0 victory in their first game of the day.
CdA takes on Blackfoot today at 10 a.m. The Vikings edged Blackfoot 2-1 earlier in the tournament.
Timberlake split a pair of games, beating South Freemont 7-2, before falling to Bishop Kelly 4-0 in the State A-2 tournament in Idaho Falls.
Timberlake plays Bear Lake this morning. The winner must beat Bishop Kelly twice for the title.
Also at the A-2 tourney, Lakeland beat Buhl 11-3 and South Freemont 6-0 before losing to Bear Lake 6-3 in a loser-out game.
State track
Bonners Ferry’s Dirk Bortz captured the State A-2 boys discus title with a personal-best throw of 161 feet, 7 inches at Bronco Stadium in Boise.
Payette’s boys were the first-day leaders with 29 points, followed by Bonners Ferry with 25. Defending champ Bishop Kelly’s girls are the A-2 first-day leaders with 31 points.
Coeur d’Alene’s Brian Babcock set a school record in winning the boys State A-1 shot put title with a toss of 58-11. The Highland boys lead the meet with 49 points, CdA is third with 24. Timberline’s girls held a 25-24 lead over Jerome.
Golf
Lake City’s boys and girls teams advanced to the championship round of the State A-1 golf tournament at Pinecrest Golf Course in Idaho Falls, along with Coeur d’Alene’s boys and Lewiston’s girls.
Baseball
Lewiston stayed alive in the State A-1 consolation bracket with a 4-1 loser-out victory over Bonneville in Boise.
St. Maries beat Wood River 8-0 in a loser-out game at the A-2 tournament in Ontario, Ore.
Bear Lake eliminated Lakeland from the A-2 tourney with a 6-2 win.
