Republicans Dominate Latah County Races

The Republicans took Latah County on Tuesday night.

Republican incumbent Paul Kimmell held onto his District 1 seat on the Latah County Commission. He defeated Democrat John Arno, a logger from Potlatch running on a platform of changing the way the county spends tax dollars.

Kimmell, a farmer from Viola, was appointed commissioner by the governor in March 1999. He won with about 60 percent of the vote in his first run at an elected office.

In District 3, Republican newcomer Jack Nelson took the seat from Democrat incumbent Sam Duncan with more than 60 percent of the vote. Nelson, a farmer from Troy, said he is ready to pass the duties of the farm on to his family and devote his energies to public service. Duncan runs the Student Health Pharmacy at Washington State University.

Two Democrats did keep their county jobs, though. Sheriff Jeff Crouch and Latah County Prosecutor William Thompson ran unopposed.
