Nic Newspaper Captures Second-Place Honor Again

For the second straight year, North Idaho College’s student newspaper has been named second best in the nation among two-year colleges.

The Sentinel received the award last weekend at the National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.

National honors also went to NIC’s Jacque Herum, who was posthumously named the second best college reporter of the year. Bill Canepa won third place for Page 1 design.

The $500 award Herum won will augment a scholarship fund established in her name for nontraditional journalism students. The Naples resident died last spring of a heart attack.

In other Northwest honors: The Argonaut, the University of Idaho’s newspaper, placed third among four-year college nondailies; Chris Sorenson of The Evergreen, Washington State University’s paper, won an honorable mention for sports photography; and The Daily, the University of Washington’s paper, won third place among four-year college dailies.

In his third such award, former Sentinel photographer Noppadol Paothong, now at Missouri Southern State College, won first place among all college papers for news photography.

NIC sent 17 representatives to the convention, which included more than 300 programs, classes and tours. Students paid most of their expenses.
