Detective Wounded While Serving Warrant
A Canyon County Sheriff’s detective sustained a gunshot wound to his leg while he tried to serve a warrant on a Portland fugitive.
Detective Cpl. Kelly Montoya, 35, and two other officers were at a home east of Nampa early Friday morning where Ronald T. Hoffman was staying.
The 33-year-old fugitive tried to escape through a window, but a police dog stopped him. In a struggle with the three detectives, Hoffman grabbed Montoya’s holstered gun. The gun discharged, sending a bullet through Montoya’s right hip and thigh.
Montoya was taken to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise and treated for flesh wounds. Hoffman was taken to West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell for treatment of dog bites and bruises.
Canyon County Sheriff George Nourse said officers showed restraint in containing Hoffman after the gunshot, as the fugitive continued to hold the weapon in spite of officers’ attempts to make him let go.
Hoffman was originally to be arrested on a first-degree arson warrant. He is now in the Canyon County jail without bail and faces charges of aggravated battery of a police officer and attempting to remove a firearm from an officer.
