Lakeland School District Grows To Help Students
The Lakeland School District is getting bigger.
The State Board of Education recently approved two requests for students living on the Kootenai-Bonner county line to join the Lakeland School District.
The district will begin serving about 14 children who live near Athol and 15 children who live north of Spirit Lake in the Treeport Subdivision.
Now, a majority of property owners in each area must vote to make the switch final. It’s unknown when Bonner County will hold the election, but state law says it has 60 days from Friday’s hearing.
Parents in these areas petitioned the state for the annexations, saying their children often rode the school bus three hours a day on dirt roads to get to schools in either Sandpoint or Priest River.
Both the Lake Pend Oreille and West Bonner County school boards have approved the requests and said the loss of students will have little effect on their districts.
