Ron Malthaner Bonners Ferry, Idaho
Memorial service for Ron Malthaner, 43, will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Malthaner, who was born in Spokane, died Oct. 18.
He grew up in various areas of the country while his father was in the military, and graduated from high school in Lexington, Ohio, in 1975.
Mr. Malthaner moved to Bonners Ferry and worked as a reining horse trainer. He married Lynn Levig in 1981.
He traveled extensively while working as a horse trainer and lived in Colorado, Ohio and Michigan, before returning to Bonners Ferry.
The couple divorced in 1996.
Mr. Malthaner was active in hunting and fishing, and crafted his own traditional archery bows.
Survivors include his son, Joe Malthaner of Bonners Ferry; his fiancee, Del Anderson and her daughter, Morgan, both of Bonners Ferry; his parents, Joe and Inez Malthaner of Ohio; a sister, Betty Schon of Wisconsin; a brother, Phil Malthaner of Spokane; and his ex-wife and friend, Lynn Malthaner of Bonners Ferry.
Carol (Ringwood) Shimek Spokane
Funeral Mass for Carol E. (Ringwood) Shimek, 45, will be at 10 a.m. today at Mary Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church in Sprague, Wash. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Shimek, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.
She graduated from Sprague High School in 1973 and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1976.
In 1975 she married Randy Shimek. They later divorced.
Mrs. Shimek worked as a registered nurse at the Ritzville Hospital.
She moved to Spokane in 1992 and worked as an oncology nurse at Holy Family Hospital.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa of Spokane, Jaime of Pullman; a son, Jason Shimek of Ritzville, Wash.; her parents, John and Joanne Ringwood of Sprague; and three sisters, Kathleen Brown of Spokane, Teresa O’Leary of Shelton, Wash., and Irene Ringwood of Arlington, Va.
Thelma Paladin-Hammonds Spokane
Service for Thelma M. Paladin-Hammonds, 92, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Paladin-Hammonds died Saturday.
She was born in Dennison, Texas and raised in Spokane.
In 1927 she graduated from West Valley High School and married George Vess. He died in 1934. She married Frank Paladin in 1936. He died in 1962.
During World War II and until the late 1950s she worked for her parents at Hank’s Place.
In 1964 she married Victor Hammonds.
Mrs. Paladin-Hammonds worked as a retail clerk for The Crescent Department Store from 1963 to 1983.
Her husband died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Michael Paladin of Spokane; a daughter, Diana Croteau of Santa Clara, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren.
Nancy (Kelley) Rizzo Spokane
Memorial service for Nancy C. (Kelley) Rizzo, 63, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rizzo, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday.
She worked as a waitress in the hospitality industry.
Survivors include six children, Wendy Calhoon, Kerry Donelson, Douglas Donelson, Rhonda French, Rory Donelson and Vitina Turner; five sisters, Virginia Havelick, Colleen Lynch, Priscilla Stumbaugh, Neva Spooner and Anne Kelley; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Violet `Vi’ Smith Spokane
Memorial service for Violet M. “Vi” (Fallgren) Smith, 96, will be at 2 p.m. today at Salem Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Smith, who was born in Sims, N.D., died Friday.
In the early 1920s she married Charles Greene, and they moved to Spokane from North Dakota in 1927. He died in 1938.
She married Harry Smith in the late 1940s, and they owned and operated The Shack Restaurant and Shanty Lounge in Spokane. During the late 1950s they operated the restaurant, lounge and gift shop at Crater Lake in Oregon.
Her husband died in 1967.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Greene of Pasco, Jack Greene of Medford, Ore., and Calvin Greene of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Dorothy Langeloh of Spokane and Laura Kist of Mandan, N.D.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth (Sharp) Vandervoorden Spokane
Service for Ruth (Sharp) Vandervoorden, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
A 33-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Vandervoorden died Saturday. She was born in Cabool, Mo.
She worked as a nurses aid and was active in the foundations for the blind. She also participated in walk-a-thons for cancer drives.
Her husband of 31 years, Theodore, died in 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Gerean of Spokane and Lee Roy Gerean of Tacoma; a brother, Edward Sharp of Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Rosie Pilkington of California and Melvie Johnson of Independence; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Monika Atwood Airway Heights
Memorial service for Monika H. Atwood, 55, was held Tuesday. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Atwood, who was born in MeinMolding, Austria, died Saturday.
She moved to the United States in 1967 and settled in Spokane. She later became a citizen.
Mrs. Atwood worked as a cutoff sawyer for a window manufacturer.
She was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Veterans of Foreign War auxiliaries.
Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Larry; and her mother, Martha Gunther of Germany.
Margaret Foskett Spokane
Memorial service for Margaret Foskett, 79, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 40-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Foskett died Friday. She was born in Maynard, Minn.
She was a homemaker, and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, John, died in 1997.
She is survived by two brothers, James Sandbo of Spokane and Robert Sandbo of Bellevue, Wash.

Patricia Hines Spokane
Memorial service for Patricia M. “Patty” Hines, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Manito Presbyterian Church.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Hines died Sunday.
She graduated from North Central High School, and in 1944 married Kenneth Hines.
Mrs. Hines was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cynthia Pace of Spokane; a son, Barry Hines of Pensacola, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Dona Watson Coeur d’Alene
Graveside service for Dona L. Watson, 84, will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Forest Cemetery, Riverview Section in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Watson, who was born in Coutts, Alberta, died Saturday.
She moved to the Coeur d’Alene area as a child, and married Dan Watson in 1938.
Mrs. Watson was a homemaker, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in needlework and cooking.
Her husband died in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, William Watson of Nine Mile Falls and Dale Watson of Mead; a daughter, Marilyn McGrath of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Bell Howard of Coeur d’Alene; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Harold `Hal’ Borlin Spokane
An open house held in the honor of Harold M. Borlin, 79, will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the family home. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Borlin died Monday from hepatitis C and liver cancer.
He graduated from Rogers High School.
Mr. Borlin served in the Army in Europe during World War II.
He graduated from Gonzaga University, where he was a member of the Glee Club under the direction of Lyle Moore. He also received a pharmaceutical degree from Washington State College.
Mr. Borlin worked as a pharmacist for more than 30 years at Skaggs Drug Store, which later became Osco Drug. He retired in the mid 1980s.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Alice; two daughters, Joan McLachlan of Davenport, Wash., and Diane McMurray of Seattle; a son, Michael Borlin of Fort Leavenworth, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Norman Thompson Spokane
Memorial service for Norman Scott Thompson will be held at a later date. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thompson, 32, died Saturday He was a lifetime Spokane resident and worked as a roofer.
Survivors include his mother, Sharon Thompson; a brother, Larry Thompson; and three sisters, Barbara, Carrie and Kimberly, all of Spokane.
Toivo Raivo Spokane
Private service for Toivo V. Raivo, 79, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Raivo, who was born in Anchorage, Alaska, died Saturday.
He was a 48-year Spokane resident.
Mr. Raivo served in the Air Force as a pilot during World War II, and worked as an electrician in commercial construction.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 25 years and was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 45 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 51.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Elaine; four sons, John Raivo of Seattle, Ron Raivo of Friday Harbor, Wash., Dennis Raivo of Oregon and David Raivo of Ocean City, Ore.; two daughters, Sue Linton and Julie Raivo, both of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tanner Conradi Rosalia, Wash.
Graveside service for Tanner Conradi, 16, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the International Order of Odd Fellows Evergreen Cemetery in Rosalia. Memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the gym at Rosalia High School. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Conradi, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Steptoe, Wash.
His family moved to Rosalia nine years ago.
He was in his junior year at Rosalia High School, where he was a member of the basketball team, the pep club and the drama club.
Mr. Conradi was a member of the Rosalia Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Gene and Connie Conradi; his mother, Laura Conradi; two brothers, Lucas and Jordan; a halfbrother, Reece; a half-sister, Laura; his grandparents, Ernie and Mareliene Conradi, Marilyn and Jim Behlen, David and Ruth Preston and Leon and Sondra Pappas; and his great-grandmother, Freda Conradi.

Wilbur `Webb’ Shawgo Newport, Wash.
Memorial gathering for Wilbur Steely “Webb” Shawgo, 89, will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport. Inurnment at the Newport Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Mr. Shawgo, who was born in Rock Lake, Wash., died Monday.
His family moved to the Newport/ Priest River, Idaho, area in 1918.
He married Ruth Shull in 1936.
During World War II he served in the Army Air Force. After the war he taught flying lessons and was a commercial pilot. He also worked for Diamond Match Co.
Mr. Shawgo was in the tire business from 1946 to 1973. He owned and operated OK Rubber Welders on Idaho Hill, which was later moved into Newport. In 1957 the business name was changed to Webb’s Texaco. He sold the business in 1973 to his cousins.
His wife died in 1990.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
