Brigham Young 38, Virginia 35, OT: Owen Pochman’s 27-yard field goal in overtime capped a Brigham Young rally as Bret Engemann threw for 447 yards to lead the Cougars (1-1) over the Cavaliers (0-1) at Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers led 21-0 at halftime but the Cougars scored five second-half touchdowns, including three TD runs by Brian McDonald.
Brigham Young tied it at 35 with 50 seconds left on a 6-yard pass from Engemann to Margin Hooks. That play capped a 49-yard drive that began when Virginia failed to convert a fourth-and-1 play.
West Virginia 34, Boston College 14: Avon Cobourne won a lackluster duel between the Big East’s top two running backs and West Virginia returned two fourth-quarter interceptions for scores as the Mountaineers (1-0) defeated the Eagles (0-1) at Morgantown, W. Va.
Mississippi St. 17, Memphis 3: Dicenzo Miller scored on a 6-yard run with 1:55 remaining as the Bulldogs (1-0) defeated the Tigers (0-1) at Memphis, Tenn.
LSU 58, Western Carolina 0: In Nick Saban’s first game as coach at LSU, Josh Booty passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns and Rohan Davey threw for 194 and three touchdowns as the Tigers (1-0) dismantled the Division I-AA Catamounts (0-1) at Baton Rouge, La.
North Carolina 30, Tulsa 9: Ronald Curry generated 261 yards of offense in his first game since rupturing an Achilles’ tendon as the Tar Heels (1-0) defeated the Golden Hurricane (0-1) at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Georgia Tech 21, Central Florida 17: George Godsey threw two touchdowns passes in the final 3:48 to lift the Yellow Jackets (1-0) over the Golden Knights (0-1) at Atlanta.
With the Yellow Jackets down 17-7 and facing third-and-18, Godsey connected with Jon Muyres on a 27-yard pass to the UCF 38 just before hitting Kelly Campbell with a 23-yard touchdown pass. The Jackets got the ball back with 3:05 to play at the Golden Knights’ 49 before Godsey eventually hit Brian Lee in the end zone for the go-ahead score with 38 seconds left.
Miami (Ohio) 33, Vanderbilt 30: Mike Bath threw two touchdown passes in the final 2:53 as the RedHawks (1-0) defeated the Commodores (0-1) at Nashville, Tenn.
Vandy led 30-20 before Bath hooked up with Mike Sullivan on a 4-yard strike to make it close, and then with Cal Murray for the 2-yard winner with just 20 seconds left on a fourth-down play.
East Carolina 38, Duke 0: Kelly Hardy returned an interception for a TD and Jamie Wilson ran for two more as the Pirates (1-0) beat the Blue Devils (0-1) at Durham, N.C.
Louisville 40, Kentucky 34 (OT): Tony Stallings scored on Louisville’s first play of overtime to give the Cardinals (1-0) their victory over the Wildcats (0-1) at Louisville, Ky.
Sam Houston St. 21, Louisiana-Lafayette 14: At Lafayette, La., Jaron Dabney scored on a late 2-yard run as the I-AA Bearkats (1-0) beat the Ragin’ Cajuns (0-1).
East
Pittsburgh 30, Kent St. 7: Lamar Slade, replacing one of six suspended Pittsburgh players, caught two touchdown passes from different quarterbacks and the Panthers (1-0) shook off two weather delays to defeat the Golden Flashes (0-1) at Pittsburgh.
Temple 17, Navy 6: At Annapolis, Md., Temple smothered Navy’s option attack and Tanardo Sharps ran for a career-high 180 yards and a touchdown as the Owls (1-0) defeated the Midshipmen (0-1), winning their season opener for the first time since 1996.
Rutgers 34, Villanova 21: Mike McMahon matched the school record with five touchdown passes and Rutgers got coach Terry Shea’s make-or-break season off to a good start as the Scarlet Knights (1-0) defeated the Division I-AA Wildcats (0-1) at Piscataway, N.J.
Syracuse 63, Buffalo 7: Chris Davis scored three touchdowns and Dee Brown gained a career-high 157 yards on 18 carries and scored twice, leading the Orangemen (1-0) over the Bulls (0-1) at Syracuse, N.Y.

E. Michigan 32, Connecticut 25: At Ypsilanti, Mich., Walter Church threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Walter with 1:50 remaining, then completed a 2-point conversion pass to Kenny Christian as the Eagles (1-0) defeated the Huskies (0-1) in Connecticut’s Division I-A debut.
Missouri 50, W. Illinois 20: At Columbia, Mo., Kirk Farmer threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Tigers (1-0) drubbed the Division I-AA Leathernecks (0-1) at Columbia, Mo.
Minnesota 47, Louisiana-Monroe 10: Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw for three touchdowns before leaving with a concussion in the second quarter as the Golden Gophers (1-0) routed the Indians (0-1) at Minneapolis.
Abdul-Khaliq, a 20-year-old freshman, absorbed a helmet-to-chin hit from Henry Whitehead on a cornerback blitz with 3:18 left in the half. He was replaced by junior college transfer Travis Cole.
Abdul-Khaliq, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 161 yards, is expected to return next week against Ohio.
Iowa St. 25, Ohio 15: Ennis Haywood rushed for 159 yards in his first start, including a 73-yard third-quarter touchdown run that helped the Cyclones (1-0) defeat the Bobcats (0-1) at Ames, Iowa.

Arkansas 38, SW Missouri St. 0: Robby Hampton, a 24-year-old sophomore making his first start, completed his first nine passes and wound up 17 of 22 for 237 yards and two touchdowns as the Razorbacks (1-0) defeated the Bears (0-1) at Little Rock, Ark.
Rice 30, Houston 27 (OT): Freshman Robbie Beck scored two touchdowns, the last a 1-yard dive in overtime, to rally the Owls (1-0) to a home victory over the Cougars (0-1) in Houston.
SMU 31, Kansas 17: Josh McCown led the Mustangs to three touchdowns and a field goal on their first four possessions as the Mustangs (1-0), playing on campus for the first time in six years, defeated the Jayhawks (0-1) at Dallas.
