Cougars Win Pair, Give Fredrick 300Th

The Washington State Cougars upped their record to 6-0 by winning twice at the Fresno State Invitational women’s volleyball tournament in Fresno, Calif.

Zanda Bautre and Holly Harris combined for 16 kills to lead the Cougars to a 15-0, 15-4, 15-11 win over UC Riverside in the tournament opener. The victory was the 300th career win for WSU coach Cindy Fredrick. In her 16 seasons as a collegiate coach Fredricks has compiled a 301-202 record, including a 215-142 mark in 12 seasons at Washington State.

Adrian Hankoff tallied 10 kills and 11 digs to spark WSU to a 15-10, 15-8, 15-5 win over Cal State Fullerton in the day’s finale.

WSU’s Kali Surplus picked up 45 assists for the two matches.

The Cougs’ 6-0 start is their best since they opened the 1997 season with 16 straight wins.

The Idaho Vandals continued their hot start by picking up a pair of victories during the first day of the Portland State Conference Challenge in Portland.

Heather Kniss had 10 kills and a .692 attack percentage to go with nine digs as the Vandals rolled to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-4 win over Portland State’s Vikings.

Later, Idaho managed 66 kills, 22 by Kniss, and a .317 attack percentage on its way to a 5-15, 15-7, 15-10, 15-13 win over Oregon State.

“This was a huge win for us,” said Vandals coach Debbie Buchanan. “OSU is a physically gifted team, but our chemistry was great. (Setter) Jenny (Neville) did a great job spreading the sets around and we unleashed on the ball.”

Idaho takes on St. Mary’s today at 10 a.m. and concludes tournament play against San Diego State at 5:30.

Kathy Tilson had 16 kills and 10 digs to propel 19th-ranked Texas to a 15-8, 7-15, 15-7, 15-9 win over Eastern Washington in the first round of the Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas.

Angie Hall paced the Eagles (1-3) with 16 kills. Teammate Courtney Bush amassed 41 assists.

Heather Marshall totaled 13 kills and 15 digs to lead 18th-ranked Texas A&M (3-2) to a 15-13, 15-10, 15-4 sweep of Washington, also at the Longhorn Classic.

Kylee Sixkiller had 10 kills and Casey Ingraham added 11 digs to spark Yakima Valley CC to a 15-7, 15-8, 7-15, 16-14 non-conference victory over North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

Jessica Janke had 10 kills and Crystal Ferris chipped in with 11 digs to pace the Cardinals (1-2).

Brittany Ahlstrom totaled 14 kills and Brooke Jensen added 11 digs to power Ricks College to a 15-7, 15-4, 16-14 sweep over Community Colleges of Spokane at Spokane Falls CC.

Cassie Beyer had 15 digs to pace CCS (4-5).

Gonzaga rolled to a 15-12, 15-8, 15-11 win over East Carolina in the first round of the Nanook Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. No details were available.

Women’s soccer

Beth Childs assisted on the game-tying goal in the first half, then booted the game-winner late in the second half to lead Washington State to a 2-1 victory over East Carolina at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament in Annapolis, Md.

Emily Cozzi put the Pirates (1-2-0) up 1-0 with an unassisted goal at the 25:17 mark.

Deka DeWitt knotted the score at 1 for WSU 2:59 later with an assist from Childs.

Childs’ game-winning score came with 8:51 remaining in the match on an assist from Liz Duncan.

WSU (2-1-0) concludes its East Coast trip with a match against Navy on Sunday.

BreeAnna Jolin scored the only goal of the match with 4:13 left in regulation as Oregon State edged Gonzaga 1-0 in a non-conference match in Corvallis, Ore.

Morgan Crabtree dribbled down the middle and hit Jolin on the left side. Jolin beat Gonzaga keeper Tara Curtis for the game-winner.

Men’s soccer

Anders Vollen scored a pair of second-half goals to spark Oakland University (Rochester, Mich.) to a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga in the opening game of the Diadora Cup in San Diego.

Vollen gave Oakland a 1-0 lead at the 63:21 mark.

Gonzaga (1-2-0) evened the score at the 70:58 mark on a Brian Ching goal. Abbas Faridnia assisted on the play.

Vollen scored the game-winner for Oakland (1-0-1) just 16 seconds later.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs exploded for four first-period goals, all in the first 10 minutes, 33 seconds, and cruised to a 6-2 exhibition victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Tri-City Coliseum in Kennewick.

Spokane led 4-1 at the end of the first period and 6-1 heading into the third period.
