Riverfront Park bubbling with fun

 (The Spokesman-Review)

DO THE KIDS have some extra energy to burn this summer? A free day just for kids will be held Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Riverfront Park. Kids Day offers many activities for kids of all ages.

There will be face painting, a fishing pond, petting zoo, hand stamping, fun with bubbles, karaoke, firetruck tours, dance teams and a bounce castle. But that’s not all. There’s also karate demos, a PK soccer shootout, coloring activities, a cow-milking contest, fast track racing, craft projects, giant trike races and games with prizes.

Still need more to do? How about testing your skills in the Fear Factor obstacle course, and when you finally need a rest, enjoy storytime on the Literacy Island beach. Sounds like a fun-filled day for all. For more information, call 459-9800.

Free concert, art projects on Friday

KPBX is sponsoring a free Kids’ Concert on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at Riverfront Park’s Clocktower Meadow. Sidetrack, an unusually eclectic band, will play fun music from jump-jive swing rockabilly for jitterbugging to country rock to electric bluegrass. The kids won’t want to sit still with such fun, danceable music. Spokane Art School will give kids special arts projects during the concert. For more information, call 328-5729.

Camp Fire collecting school supplies

It’s time to think about going back to school and getting the kids a new lunchbox, backpack and supplies. Some families are not able to afford any of these items, but thanks to Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council and area businesses, the 10th annual “Kids Helping Kids Back to School” campaign will be collecting supplies Saturday and Sunday and Aug. 21-22.

Camp Fire youths and volunteers will be collecting school supply donations at Wal-Mart in the Spokane Valley, Shadle, Northpointe, Post Falls and Lewiston; Rosauers in the Spokane Valley, South Hill and Northside; the downtown Office Depot in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, Yokes in Airway Heights, Ben Franklin in Cheney, Rite Aid in Hayden and Kmart in Lewiston.

All donations will remain in the community in which they are collected. For more information, call 747-6191, ext. 20.

Kids can still check out Seahawks

If the kids didn’t already get a chance to see the Seattle Seahawks up close during summer training camp, there are still some practices left. The Hawks are in Green Bay, Wis., today for a pre-season game against the Packers, but will be back to practicing at Eastern Washington University on Wednesday, 8:45-11:15 a.m. and 2-3 p.m., Thursday from 8:45-11:15 a.m. and 2:45-4:15 p.m., and Friday from 10-11 a.m. Practices are held at EWU practice field No. 1 near the tennis courts on Washington Street in Cheney.

Practices are free and open to the public. Fans of all ages will find things to do as they come to watch the team, get autographs from team members, visit the campus, have lunch in the student union building and enjoy other activities that take place during the Seahawks summer training camp. Particular attention is paid to some of the youngest Seahawks fans, as a special time is set aside for youngsters who participate in the games of the NFL Experience on the mornings that practices are held. Tickets for the NFL Experience are distributed free on site, and the young ticket-holders will be given access to the field to get autographs from select players after the morning practices.
