Russian skaters win
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Russia’s Evgeny Plushenko and Irina Slutskaya won their divisions at the Marshalls World Cup of Skating on Friday night.
The competition at The Palace of Auburn Hills in front of a crowd of 10,271, included men’s and women’s divisions of six skaters each.
Plushenko ran away with his competition, with American Evan Lysacek finishing second and France’s Brian Joubert third. Slutskaya also won convincingly, finishing ahead of Americans Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen.
Plushenko, the 2004 World Champion, is coming off a delay in the start of his training. He was sidelined for part of the summer by the death of his grandmother and was hospitalized for two weeks for pneumonia.
“I am tired, but that was good,” Plushenko said. “My conditioning is getting better. For next year I want to prepare a new quad salchow, perhaps for (2005) Worlds or for the Olympic year (2006).”
The 2005 Worlds will be in Moscow from March 14-20.
