Streaking Utes top Frogs

Lana Sitterud made seven 3s in a career-high 27-point performance, and Kim Smith added 23 as the Utah Utes (7-2) beat the No. 23 Texas Christian Frogs (7-3) 85-72 Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Utes’ sixth straight victory.

Clinging to a 67-65 lead, Smith hit two 3s and Sitterud her seventh of the game to stretch Utah’s lead to 76-69. The Utes made nine of 10 from the line in the final 1:33.

Sandora Irvin led the Lady Frogs with 20 points and nine rebounds, and became the school’s all-time leading scorer. The 6-foot-3 post player broke the record when she rebounded her own miss and banked it in with 4:16 left.

Janice Dziuk, who played from 1986-90, held the TCU record of 1,448 points. Irvin, who ended the game with 1,451, already was the program’s career-leading rebounder and shot blocker. Irvin also had three blocks to move into a tie for ninth place on the all-time NCAA list with 359.

Shona Thorburn had 12 points and 11 assists for the Utes, whose only two losses are to top-15 teams at the time they played. Most of the assists were on penetrations and kick-out passes to Sitterud and Smith, who went 5 of 5 on her 3-point attempts.

TCU dominated inside with a 28-12 point advantage but could not overcome Utah’s long-range accuracy.

Vanessa Clementino had 12 points and JimAnne Baker 11 for TCU.

Baylor dominated throughout, leading 52-31 by halftime. Shannon Schonrock made a pair of 3-pointers to move into third place on Minnesota’s career list with 121.
