LOOKING AHEAD
As high schools take their winter breaks, so does the Prep Page, so this is the last Quick Hits for a couple of weeks. By the time we return, league games for the Greater Spokane League will have started and we should have a better grip on the top teams.
So far there have been few surprises on the girls side of the ledger. We knew University and Lewis and Clark were going to be strong, and they are. We knew Mt. Spokane, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley would be tough, and they are. If anything, the surprises have been pleasant ones, as in North Central’s 4-0 record.
On the boys side, West Valley and Ferris being undefeated probably doesn’t shock anyone, but CV’s 4-1 mark could be considered unexpected.
Two more nights of non-league action between the GSL schools remain. Many of the league’s teams are off until Jan. 4. We’ll see you again on Jan. 6.

LOOKING AROUND
It was two seasons ago that Adam Morrison led Mead to the State 4A finals. Since then, he’s taken his game to the next level, starting for Gonzaga University after a summer spent playing in an international tournament. But Morrison still has a soft spot for the Panthers as his appearance at Tuesday night’s home game with Ferris showed. With Bulldogs teammates Erroll Knight and Derek Raivio in tow, Morrison showed up to cheer for Mead. He and Knight were the target of many pint-sized autograph seekers. The two (Raivio was tucked away two rows higher, pretty much out of reach of the smaller fans) signed every piece of paper or program thrust at them, and took time to talk with the future basketball players – and current Gonzaga fans. …Clarkston sophomore girls basketball standout Misty Atkinson has been conspicuously absent from the 2-2 Bantams lineup. She will be until the first of the year, said coach Len Kelly. She injured her shoulder against Chief Sealth in the State 3A tournament last year, he explained, hurt it again last summer, but after rehabilitation it flared up again in October, necessitating surgery. “Right now her mobility and range of motion is good. It’s just the strength that needs to come back,” Kelly said. Last year Atkinson averaged nearly 11 points per game in the GSL and increased it to 17 per game in postseason. … Shadle Park’s leading girls scorer, Lexi Bishop, suffered a concussion and did not play in Tuesday’s game against LC. … Mead finished 50th in the final PrepVolleyball.com national rankings. The back-to-back state champions were ranked 39th heading into the season. U-Hi and G-Prep also were mentioned in the top 200. Eisenhower finished 73rd. … There were some big hoops matchup on the West Side in the past week but none was bigger than Tuesday night’s 3A showdown between top-ranked Seattle Prep and defending state champion O’Dea. Prep, led by University of Washington-bound Martell Webster’s 29 points, pulled away in the last quarter to win 60-56. … Brie Felnagle, the two-time Washington State 4A girls cross country champion, finished sixth in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last Saturday in San Diego. Felnagle, a senior from Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, ran 18:02. Zoe Nelson, a senior at Flathead High in Kalispell, finished eighth in 18:09. No Spokane runners competed in the race.
