Mead volleyball team well-represented

Mead’s Rachael Schurman was named Most Valuable Player and Panthers’ coach Judy Kight Coach of the Year on the 2004 Washington state sportswriters’ 4A All-State volleyball team.

The Panthers, who won the state title, also placed setter Lacey Anderson on the first team. Schurman was also honored as a first-team hitter as was University’s Mandy Daniels. Ivy Bush of Lewis and Clark was named to the second team as a hitter.

Whitney Loan of Colville was a first-team hitter selection on the 2A team. She was joined on the first team by Pullman setter Amy Small.

Amy Bruya and Sue Doering, who led Colfax to the 1A state championship, were named MVP and Coach of the Year, respectively. Bruya was also named as the first-team setter. The Bulldogs’ Jill Solbreck earned second-team hitter honors, while Freeman’s Jessie DePell was an honorable mention recipient.

In the B ranks, Garfield-Palouse’s Holli Holbrook was the MVP and Ron Dinsmoor was Coach of the Year after winning the State B title. Holbrook and Monica Boone of Gar-Pal were also named to the first team, as was Stacie Shields of Sprague-Harrington.

Second-team members included Brenda Hershaw of Gar-Pal and Traci Linstrum and Kaylee Semprimoznik of Davenport.

Girls soccer

The sports writers’ all-state soccer teams were also announced, with Gonzaga Prep midfielder Alex Butler and University forward Tonya Schnibbe named to the 4A first team. Prep’s Sarah Dean was a second-team selection at forward while teammate Elise Kuhar-Pitters was an honorable mention goalkeeper.

Whitney Ramsey of North Central was the only Greater Spokane League player to earn 3A honors, being named to the second team at midfield.

Pullman midfielder Katie Spangenberg and Riverside defender Randi Hollen were named to the 2A first team. Sara Massey of Medical Lake was a second-team forward.

Football

The Pac-NW8 All-Region Team, featuring 8-man players from Oregon, Idaho and Washington, included seven players area on the first team, including four from State B-8 champion LaCrosse-Washtucna.

L-W lineman Jeff Bafus was named the overall Player of the Year. Columbia (Hunters) quarterback Dominic Kegel is the Offensive Player of the Year.

Bafus’ teammates Kevin Dainty (running back/linebacker) and linemen Matt Martin and Michael Martin were first team on offense and defense. Sprague-Harrington’s Josh Adams was the first-team all-purpose back. Kegel was also a first-team selection at defensive back. Clayton Hewitt of Clark Fork was also a first team defensive back.
