Salmon fishing season to end early

Boise The salmon fishing season on the Main stem and South Fork of the Salmon River will close at the end of the day Saturday, nearly a month earlier than officials had originally planned, Fish and Game Department director Steve Huffaker announced Wednesday that he instigated the emergency closure because fisheries managers believe that the allowable number of salmon will have been taken from the river by then. Salmon seasons have been ongoing in various Idaho waters since April 24. The closures affect river sections 11, 12 and 21, as identified in the state’s salmon fishing rules. The fisheries are to close at 10:34 p.m. MDT on July 3. “The announcement is being made now because we know this will disrupt plans for a large number of salmon anglers, and we want to give as much notice as possible,” Huffaker said in the statement. “I know many people and communities will be unhappy, but it is essential the Department take its conservation responsibilities seriously.” Ongoing salmon fisheries in the Little Salmon River, the Lochsa River, and the South Fork of the Clearwater River will not be affected.
