Wednesday’s games

The Spokesman-Review

Pirates 6, Cardinals 5: At Pittsburgh, Bobby Hill drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the ninth and Tike Redman had three RBIs to lead the Pirates to a victory over St. Louis, completing their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at home in 15 years. Julian Tavarez replaced St. Louis starter Matt Morris to start the ninth and quickly got the first two hitters, but Jack Wilson and Rob Mackowiak singled — each had three hits — and Hill lined a single into right field to score Wilson.

Astros 3, Cubs 2: At Chicago, in his fifth game since being traded from Kansas City, Carlos Beltran homered off LaTroy Hawkins with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to send Houston over the Cubs. Craig Biggio homered twice for Houston, atoning for a costly error the previous day.

Braves 9, Marlins 6: At Atlanta, J.D. Drew homered twice and Sam McConnell earned his first major league win to lead the Braves past Florida. It was the seventh career two-homer game for Drew — his first since Oct. 3, 2001 — and he tied a career high with five RBIs.

Expos 6, Phillies 3: At Philadelphia, Juan Rivera hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Montreal overcame Jim Thome’s major league-leading 27th homer in a win over the Phillies.

Reds 2, Mets 0: At Cincinnati, Cory Lidle topped stingy Tom Glavine and shut down New York for the second time in a week, leading the Reds to a victory.

Brewers 5, Rockies 4: At Denver, Ben Sheets struck out eight in seven-plus innings and Junior Spivey homered, helping Milwaukee beat Colorado for its fourth straight victory.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 5: At Phoenix, Danny Bautista hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning, and Arizona stopped its franchise-record losing streak at 11 games with a victory over San Diego.

Giants 7, Dodgers 1: At Los Angeles, Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer for his 1,300th career extra-base hit, Brett Tomko came within two outs of his first major league shutout and San Francisco defeated the Dodgers.
