Community events

The internationally acclaimed and Grammy-nominated African Children’s Choir will perform at several locations in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene this month.

Formed in 1984 when Ray Barnett was in Uganda during the country’s civil war, the choir includes 26 orphaned or disadvantaged children from Africa who range in age from 5 through 12.

Barnett wanted to find a way for the orphaned children of the war to express themselves through music and be able to give back to their communities later in life, so he established a music school. The choir has since performed throughout the world, and other schools have been established in Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan and South Africa.

The group will perform native music, popular gospel music and spirituals at the following locations: Word of Faith Christian Center, 4001 N. Cook St., Friday at 7 p.m. (891-5253); Community United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene, July 23 at 7 p.m. (208-765-8800); and Calvary Chapel, 511 W.
