Lake City girls run to regional title

Megan Garcia had a hand in four wins Friday as Lake City’s girls dominated relays and runs while winning the 5A Region I track and field meet at Lewiston.

Garcia won the 100-meter run in 12.3 seconds, the 200 in 25.6, and ran legs on the victorious 400 and 1,600 relays.

The Timberwolves scored 104 points to more than double runner-up Coeur d’Alene’s 47.

LC’s Breanna Sande won the 800 (2:21.3) and 1,600 (5:20.9), and joined on the winning 1,600 relay. Sasha Tucker ran on the Timberwolves’ 400 and 800 relays, and won the 400 in 59.0.

Lewiston won the boys 5A meet, scoring 73 1/2 points to hold off LC (57) and CdA (55 1/2 ). CdA winners were Wes Noble, 200; Taylor Neal, 800; and Michael Armon, 1,600. For LC, J.D. Wood won the 300 hurdles and the team won the 400 relay.

Nick Mehalechko won the 100 (11.3) and Martin Lebsock the 200 (23.4) as Post Falls captured the 4A Region I boys title by edging Sandpoint 66-65 at Lewiston. Lebsock also placed second in the 100 and teamed with Mehalechko on the winning 400 relay. For Sandpoint, Mike Staggs won the 400, Blake Mahler the 300 hurdles, and both ran legs on a pair of winning relays. Moscow scored 72 1/2 points to win the 4A girls title. Amy Dyck of third-place Sandpoint won the 100 and 200 and ran on the winning 400 relay.

• Timberlake’s boys and Bonners Ferry’s girls took the team leads after the first day of the 3A District I meet at Timberlake High in Spirit Lake. Timberlake’s boys scored 57 points for a 19 1/2 -point gap on second-place Kellogg. Tyler Zwiers (3,200), Eric Lambert (long jump) and Zack Jones (shot put) were Timberlake’s winners. BF’s girls totaled 53 points to lead Timberlake by 17 1/2 . Jenna Hays won the pole vault and Katie Poston the discus for the first-place Badgers.

• Wallace’s Gretchen Bailey soared 17 feet, 6 3/4 inches to win the girls long jump during the opening day of the 2A District I-II meet at Kamiah. Wallace’s Johnny Ramirez placed sixth in the boys long jump. Grangeville’s boys and girls lead the team races.

• Kootenai’s girls jumped to a big lead after the first day of the 1A District I-II meet at Kamiah. The Warriors scored 52 points, boosted by wins by Darcy Collins in the high jump (4-10), Amy Nikita in the shot put (36-6 1/4 ) and the medley relay team (1:53.8). Kootenai scored 52 points for a 21-point gap on Troy. Katie Hoye of Falls Christian Academy placed second in the long jump. Kootenai’s boys, guided by Jesse Dyer’s winning long jump of 20- 1/4 , scored 26 points to trail Nezperce (41) and Troy (37). Mullan’s James Hegbloom won the shot put (47-6).

Softball

Kristi Smith coaxed three consecutive flyouts with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and fourth-seeded St. Maries (14-12) surprised No. 1 Lakeland 6-5 in a semifinal of the 3A District I tournament at Timberlake High in Spirit Lake. St. Maries will play third-seeded Timberlake (17-9) at 9 a.m. today for a berth to state. The Hawks (20-4) forced extra innings with a three-run seventh. Chrissy Noyes’ RBI groundout in the eighth provided the winning run. Lakeland will meet Priest River at 11 a.m. today in a loser-out game. The winner will meet the St. Maries/Timberlake loser at 1 p.m. for the final berth to state… . St. Maries began the day with an 8-5 win that eliminated Kellogg (6-14)… . Kayla Allred struck out five and Shanda Masterson went 2 for 3 with two runs as Timberlake registered a 7-5 win over second-seeded Priest River (13-8) in the other semifinal. Melissa Piephoff pitched a five-inning one-hitter, striking out eight, as Timberlake opened the day with a 22-0 win that ousted Bonners Ferry (0-19).
