Two from GSL to play in consolation semifinals

The Greater Spokane League sent two singles players, a boy and a girl, into the semifinal round at the State 4A tennis championships in Spokane Valley on Friday.

Unfortunately, they will be playing in the consolation semifinals.

Lewis and Clark’s Anna Gullickson and Mt. Spokane’s Logan Napolsky are the only GSL players to make it to Day 2.

Gullickson, who lost her first match 6-4, 7-6 to Bremerton’s Iliana Petrova, defeated Decatur’s Jamie Chan 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the first round of consolation. Down 2-5 in the final set, Gullickson won the next five games.

“I just took it one point at a time,” she said. “I just plugged away and didn’t think about what could happen.”

She faced two match points before making her comeback.

“I wasn’t serving as well as I would have liked,” Gullickson said.

Gonzaga Prep’s Vanessa Anderson lost to Bellarmine Prep’s Suzie Matzenhauer 6-0, 6-1, then beat Mountain View’s Jaclyn Webb 6-0, 6-1.

Olympic’s Erika Feltus defeated LC’s Kasie King 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in round one, and King lost her second match on an injury default.

“(Kasie’s) lower leg was hurting in her first match.” coach John Kenlein said. “It’s better to err on the side of caution than to make it worse. She is a junior so she still has another shot and I am more than supportive of her decision to forfeit.”

Napolsky beat Emerald Ridge’s Greg Ferry 6-1, 6-1 in round one, but lost his quarterfinal 6-1, 6-0 to Christopher Rice of Decatur. In the consolation quarterfinal, Napolsky beat Marc Siegel of Walla Walla 6-2, 7-6.
