Man jailed on attempted-rape charge

A 25-year-old man was arrested Monday morning after being accused of holding his girlfriend against her will and attempting to rape her, Spokane police said.

Phong Q. Do was charged with attempted second-degree rape and unlawful imprisonment. He appeared in Superior Court on Monday, where bond was set at $100,000.

According to a court affidavit, Do’s girlfriend was at his apartment on Sunday night where he knowingly restrained her and attempted to engage in sexual intercourse by force. The affidavit states the victim will testify Do used bodily force and that he grabbed her, tore her clothes and forced her into his vehicle.

Police arrested Do at 1 p.m. on the 3000 block of South Perry, the affidavit said.

Death of hunter under investigation

A hunting accident in which a Colville-area man was killed remained under investigation Monday.

Details were unavailable, but Stevens County Sheriff Craig Thayer said Alexsandr Gudima, 64, was killed about 12:40 p.m. Friday while hunting on state land about 12 miles northwest of Colville.

Gudima was shot by his hunting partner, Aleksandr V. Tyutyunnik, of the Kennewick area, according to the sheriff. No decision had been reached Monday on whether to charge Tyutyunnik.

Rape reported on South Hill

Detectives are investigating the report of an early morning rape on Monday on the lower South Hill, police said.

The victim told police she had been watching TV and dozed off on the couch when she awakened with a man standing over her in her apartment, on West Ninth Avenue near Lincoln. She said he forced her into her bedroom, where the rape occurred, and then fled.

The woman described the man as an African American, with a dark complexion. She said he had a slender build and was between the ages of 30 and 35. He had a long nose and almond-shaped eyes. Anyone with information on the suspect should call Crime Check at 456-2233.

Sex offender living in Northeast Spokane

Gregory Spears, a Level III sex offender considered a high risk to re-offend, is living on East Rockwell Avenue in Northeast Spokane, police report. Spears is 43 years old, 6-foot-2, 240 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

He was convicted in Spokane County in October 1993 of the rape of an adult female acquaintance, police said. Because he completed his prison term he is not under the supervision of the Department of Corrections. He is not wanted by authorities at this time.

Boy Scouts food drive on Saturday

Thousands of local Boy Scouts will participate in the 22nd annual Scouting for Food Drive on Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon. The scouts will collect food door-to-door in neighborhoods throughout Spokane County for Second Harvest Inland Northwest.

Residents are asked to fill bags with non-perishable food items and place them on their front porches by 8 a.m.. Local Scouts hope to collect 135,000 pounds of food.

Flu shots unavailable in British Columbia

Public health clinics in British Columbia have stopped providing flu shots to Americans, in an effort to reserve the vaccine for at-risk Canadians, health officials announced Monday.

All Americans who have appointments to visit British Columbian public health clinics will not receive the shots and are urged to cancel their plans, according to the Spokane Regional Health District.

“We don’t want people seeking flu vaccine to make a long trip to Canada only to be turned away when they arrive,” said Dr. Kim Marie Thorburn, Spokane County health officer, in a news release.

The Health District advises people at high risk of influenza to be persistent in seeking the vaccine through their doctor or community flu clinics. People can check for flu-shot availability by checking www.findaflushot.com or calling the flu hotline at 324-1643.
