Stubblefield needs five receptions to tie NCAA record

Associated Press

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Taylor Stubblefield has never lacked confidence on the football field.

But he admits he never expected to be on the brink of breaking the NCAA career receptions record when he first arrived in West Lafayette five years ago.

“I don’t think anybody comes into school and says, ‘I’m going to set an NCAA record,’ ” Stubblefield said. “It’s exciting.”

The Purdue senior enters Saturday’s game against intrastate rival Indiana with 295 catches. That is five shy of former Louisville receiver Arnold Jackson’s record.

Stubblefield is tied with Marshall receiver Josh Davis, but Purdue is going to a bowl game this season, giving Stubblefield, of Davis High, one more game to play.

“I’m amazed a little skinny kid from Yakima, Wash., can come in here and catch that many balls,” Purdue coach Joe Tiller said.
