Yankees 5, Indians 3: At New York, Orlando Hernandez limited Cleveland to three hits in seven innings and Jorge Posada hit a go-ahead, two-run homer that led New York over the Indians. Hernandez struck out seven and didn’t allow a runner past second base after the first inning.
Red Sox 12, Angels 7: At Boston, Kevin Millar homered and drove in four runs, and Boston opened a 3 1/2 -game lead over Anaheim in the A.L. wild-card race with a win over the Angels. It was Boston’s eighth straight win. Johnny Damon had four of Boston’s 16 hits.
Twins 4, Rangers 2: At Minneapolis, Terry Tiffee hit a go-ahead, two-run double in his major league debut to cap an eighth-inning rally and help Minnesota deal Texas its third consecutive loss. Jesse Crain (1-0) pitched two perfect innings for his first major league win.
White Sox 5, Athletics 4: At Chicago, pinch-hitter Ross Gload hit an RBI single in the ninth to help Chicago end Oakland’s eight-game winning streak. .
Orioles 8, Devil Rays 0: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Javy Lopez drove in four runs, Daniel Cabrera became the first rookie to win 10 games this season, and Baltimore held Tampa Bay to two hits in its shutout victory.
Royals 1, Tigers 0: At Kansas City, Mo., rookie Zack Greinke pitched three-hit ball for seven innings in Kansas City’s victory over Detroit. Greinke (7-9), who does not turn 21 until Oct. 21, retired the first 15 batters he faced, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
