Barry Bonds hit his 699th career home run, and the San Francisco Giants regained the wild-card lead with a 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

Bonds walked twice, increasing his record total to 203, then took a called third strike and grounded out before homering in the ninth off Mike Koplove, a drive off the bottom of the center-field scoreboard that was estimated at 460 feet.

Jason Schmidt (16-6) pitched a four-hitter, struck out nine and walked two in his fourth complete game of the season, retiring 21 consecutive batters in one stretch.

Marlins 11, Cubs 1: Juan Pierre had three of Florida’s 15 hits and A.J. Burnett pitched eight strong innings as the Marlins got an easy win in Chicago. Florida is 2 1/2 games behind the Cubs in the wild-card standings.

Cardinals 7, Dodgers 6: Larry Walker went 4 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs, powering St. Louis to a win in Los Angeles. The win reduced the Cardinals’ magic number to five for clinching the Central.

Padres 15, Rockies 2: Brian Giles hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning, then capped a 12-run ninth with a three-run homer as San Diego won at Colorado.

Astros 5, Pirates 4 (10): Jason Lane’s pinch-hit double drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as Houston, held hitless by Dave Williams for six innings, rallied to win in Pittsburgh.

Phillies 4, Mets 2: Vicente Padilla pitched 62/3 shutout innings in his best start since coming off the DL and led Philadelphia to a three-game sweep in New York.

Braves 9, Expos 8 (12): Andruw Jones hit a winning double in the 12th inning to lead Atlanta past visiting Montreal.

Brewers 11, Reds 0: Russell Branyan and Brady Clark combined for three home runs and six RBIs against their former team as Milwaukee won in Cincinnati.
