Dreyer’s chocolate-covered snacks a hit

Lorie Hutson Food editor

It’s not often that the Spokesman-Review food panel tasters are clamoring for seconds.

Sometimes they’re reluctant to try a second bite, let alone a second flavor of a new product. This time the volunteers were disappointed because there were only two varieties of Dreyer’s Dibs on the menu.

Dreyer’s chocolate-covered ice cream snacks in vanilla and mint flavors missed the panel’s top ranking by just one point each. The tasters loved these indulgent little bits of dessert.

“Now that is what I’m talking about,” said Matt Quesnell. “I’d like to take some of these home and pop a bunch while watching a movie. Great chocolate and really tasty vanilla inside. Eating these makes me happy.”

Larry Inman said the ice-cream bites were yummy and innovative. “Delicious! Best frozen dessert to come along in years,” he said.

“Small wonder bites of dark chocolate heaven,” said Andy Hoye. “Serve them after a so-so meal to be remembered as a star.”

Even Donald Clegg, who isn’t a huge fan of sweets, gave the vanilla treats five stars. “Although they look like some odd kind of doggy treat, don’t give ‘em to your pooch. Crunchy, good chocolate and lots of it.”

He gave the mint flavor a bit lower rating. “Also very good, although the mint perhaps overwhelms the chocolate a bit.”

Tina Johnson compared the flavor of the vanilla Dibs to “teeny Eskimo pies.” And the mint flavor? “Andes candies meets the Eskimo man,” she said.

Everyone agreed the snacks were dangerous. Each container has 60 chocolate-covered bites inside. Be careful, panel tasters said, they’ll disappear in no time.

“Have a partner to share them with or you will eat them all,” said Nancy Robinson

Hoye agreed. “You will want to try for the world record consumption of these,” he said of the mint ice cream flavor.

Calorie counters should avert their eyes from the nutrition information. A serving of Dibs will set you back 420 calories and deliver 32 grams of fat, about 19 of them saturated.

“Not for anyone one on a diet,” Robinson said.

Dreyer’s Dibs also come in Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolaty coating, Vanilla Ice Cream with Drumstick coating and Vanilla Ice Cream with Crunch coating.
