Zags Bailey, Batista earn weekly honors in WCC

Two Gonzaga University athletes were honored by the West Coast Conference on Monday.

Anne Bailey was named the women’s basketball player of the week. J.P. Batista shared the men’s honor with Corey Belser of San Diego.

Bailey, a junior, led wins over nationally ranked Utah and Denver. She averaged 14.5 points – she scored 18 against Utah – while shooting 76 percent from the field, and averaged 4.5 rebounds in the two home wins.

Batista, a transfer, had a career-high 18 points in leading a win over previously unbeaten and No. 3-ranked Oklahoma State, then had his first double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) in a loss at Missouri.

Ex-UI A.D.’s funeral Wednesday

Funeral services for former University of Idaho athletic director Leon G. Green, who died Dec. 30 from natural causes at his home in McCammon, Idaho, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the McCammon LDS Church. He was 90.

A UI football player from 1934-36, he returned from a stint in the Navy during WWII to work at Idaho.In 1951 he became head of the physical education department, a position he held until his retirement in 1978. He also served as A.D. from 1971-78.

Hockey

Spokane Chiefs J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Mike Reich will be rivals tonight in the gold medal game of the World Under 17 Tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Szaszkiewicz had his second goal of the tournament as Team Pacific, coached by a former Chiefs assistant, Bill Peters, beat defending champion Ontario 9-1 in the semifinals. Reich’s Team West beat Atlantic 7-3.
