Mead graduate Eneroth qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Recent Mead High graduate Amy Eneroth shot a 4-under-par 68 Thursday at Bellingham Golf and Country Club to take medalist honors at a sectional qualifier for the 105th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

Eneroth’s round consisted of six birdies and two bogeys. She leads a group of five qualifiers to the Aug. 1-7 tournament at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Ga.

Renee Skidmore of Everett, Wash., who competes for the University of Idaho, qualified with a 72.

Scores of other area players: Haley Parsons, University High grad, 79; Maria Kostina, Washington State University, 80; Sarah Bassett, Notre Dame/Lewis and Clark High, 81; and Mandy Parsons, U-Hi grad, 82.

“Ferris High product Corey Prugh, competing for Black Rock Golf Club, and Seattle Golf Club’s Ryan Benzel (Ritzville) finished tied for third place at the Oregon Open in Sisters.

Prugh, who shot a 2-under 70 in the final round at Aspen Lakes Golf Club, and Benzel (73) completed three rounds at 5-under 211 and earned $2,450 apiece.

Former Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Hanson, an amateur, finished at 210 and defeated Mike Gove of Inglewood Golf Club in a two-hole playoff.

Amateur Alex Prugh (University of Washington/Ferris), competing for Manito Golf and Country Club, fired a final-round 68 and tied for sixth, one shot behind brother Corey. Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan had the day’s best round, a 67, and tied for 15th at 218.

Men’s basketball

Keoni Watson, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard, has transferred to Idaho from Seward County (Kan.) Community College, Vandals coach Leonard Perry announced.

During his sophomore season, Watson averaged 18.3 points per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line.

“Keoni will be an impact player for us immediately,” Perry said. “There is no question, he will be playing. He is a winner and hates to lose, and that’s why he is such a good fit for us. What I think our fans will like about him is that he is extremely exciting and explosive.”

Volleyball

Former Lewis-Clark State College player Erin Brown was named the Warriors’ head coach on Wednesday, LCSC President Dene K. Thomas announced.

Brown, who played for the Warriors in 1999, replaces Jerry Pruitt, who accepted a high school position in Utah.

Brown was named head coach at Nicholls (La.) State University on May 18, but never signed and wasn’t under contract. Her starting date was to have been today.

Baseball

The Bellingham Bells (3-1) edged the Spokane RiverHawks 1-0 to win a best-of-3 series 2-1 in West Coast Collegiate League play at Joe Martin Stadium.

Jay Bryner allowed seven hits for Spokane (3-11). Cory Rickard went 2 for 4 for the RiverHawks, who play a non-league doubleheader at Mount Vernon today.
