Electrics, Reds open with wins

The Great Falls Electrics and the Idaho Falls Reds each opened the Fourth of July Senior American Legion tournament with two victories Friday.

At Jackson Field, Great Falls beat the Riley Creek Lakers of Sandpoint 7-2 in its first game. In the second game, the Electrics beat the Trail (British Columbia) Blue Jays 2-1.

At Whitworth College, Idaho Falls beat a pair of Patriots – outlasting the Post Falls Prairie Patriots 5-3 before beating the Everett Patriots 7-3.

In other games involving local teams, the Spokane Blue Devils beat the Kalispell Lakers 7-6 at Whitworth, while the El Segundo (Calif.) Blue beat the Spokane Northstars 3-0 in the final game at Jackson Field.

The tournament continues through Monday.

RiverHawks lose to Cardinals

Bryan Winston homered, but the Spokane RiverHawks (4-12) of the West Coast Collegiate League dropped a 6-5 non-league decision to the host Mount Vernon Cardinals of the Pacific International League.

The RiverHawks return to league play when they host the league-leading Aloha Knights at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.
