Royals 5, Tigers 0: At Detroit, Runelvys Hernandez allowed two hits through five innings before he was ejected after triggering a bench-clearing brawl in the sixth, and Kansas City beat Detroit. Mike Sweeney and Mark Teahen added homers for the Royals.

White Sox 4, Indians 0: At Cleveland, Jon Garland pitched six shutout innings and became the A.L.’s first 14-game winner this season as Chicago completed its first four-game sweep in Cleveland in 42 years. Tadahito Iguchi and A.J. Pierzynski homered for Chicago.

Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 4: At Toronto, Jorge Cantu hit a go-ahead double in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay took three of four games over Toronto in the weekend series.

Angels 2, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, John Lackey tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and Jeff DaVanon homered to lead Los Angeles over Minnesota.

Athletics 5, Rangers 4 (14): At Oakland, Bobby Kielty led off the 14th inning with a home run, sending streaking Oakland over Texas. Kielty, who entered as a pinch-runner in the ninth, won it with a long shot to right off Kameron Loe (3-2).

Yankees 5, Red Sox 3: At Boston, Al Leiter rewarded New York just one day after being rescued from the scrap heap, pitching three-hit ball into the seventh inning to help the Yankees pull within a half-game of Boston in the East.

National League

Mets 8, Braves 1: At New York, Pedro Martinez held Atlanta to two hits over six innings and New York earned a split of the four-game series.

Reds 9, Rockies 4: At Cincinnati, Javier Valentin hit his first career grand slam and a three-run homer, connecting from both sides of the plate, and Sean Casey and Ken Griffey Jr. also connected as Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep of Colorado.

Phillies 8, Marlins 4: At Philadelphia, Vicente Padilla allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings and hit a two-run triple off struggling Dontrelle Willis as Philadelphia defeated Florida.

Brewers 5, Nationals 3: At Milwaukee, Tomo Ohka allowed four hits in seven innings against his former Washington teammates to lead Milwaukee to a win.

Cardinals 3, Astros 0: At St. Louis, Chris Carpenter outpitched Roger Clemens to become the N.L.’s first 14-game winner this season. The All-Star starter tossed a three-hitter, to lead the Cardinals over Houston.

Cubs 8, Pirates 2: At Chicago, Derrek Lee hit his N.L.-leading 28th home run, Carlos Zambrano allowed one unearned run on five hits in eight innings and Chicago beat Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks 6, Padres 1: At San Diego, Chad Tracy had the first two-home run game of his career to lead Arizona over San Diego.

Giants 4, Dodgers 1: At Los Angeles, Michael Tucker hit a three-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning, Ray Durham also hit a home run and San Francisco beat Los Angeles.
