The Spokesman-Review

Friday was a bad day to be a pitcher at the AA Area A Junior American Legion district baseball tournament at McEuen Field in Coeur d’Alene.

Two games were played, with a total of 83 runs scored.

Lewiston scored seven first-inning runs and led 15-4 after three innings. Sandpoint battled back, scoring eight runs in the fifth, and trailed 20-18 before Lewiston settled matters with a six-run eighth.

Cory Kreighbaum had a three-run home run, Dan Lau singled three times and drove in three runs and Mike Estrada went 4 for 6 with three RBIs to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 24-15 win over Trail, British Columbia.

Trail and Sandpoint played a late loser-out game.

Play continues today.

Basketball

Former Greater Spokane League basketball Most Valuable Player Danny Pariseau is transferring from Eastern Washington University to Santa Clara, his mother Cathy confirmed this week.

Pariseau was one of three Eagles to quit the program after the Big Sky Conference defending champions and NCAA Tournament participants went 8-20 overall, 5-9 in conference.

Starting post Matt Nelson transferred to Boise State, and reserve guard Eric Hinkle went to Carroll College in Montana.

Pariseau, a 5-foot-11 point guard out of Shadle Park, will walk on and have to sit out one season as a transfer. He’ll have one season to play for the Broncos.

He was the first freshman from Spokane to play at Eastern since the 1978-79 season.

Pariseau, who averaged 6.4 points and had 119 assists, is a chemistry major who should complete his degree next spring and then likely go to graduate school in business as he finishes basketball eligibility.

Golf

Alex Prugh, a Ferris High School graduate and a University of Washington junior, missed advancing at the Western Amateur Golf Championship in Benton Harbor, Mich., by one stroke.

Prugh shot a 6-over-par 76 in the morning round, but bounced back in the afternoon with a 2-under 68. He finished the first four rounds with a 6-over 286 total, one shot out of the round of 16.
