Gators, Cornhuskers, Volunteers all win Super Regional series

Erik Averill gave up one run over 7 2/3 innings, and Arizona State scored four runs in the eighth inning of a 6-2 victory to even its Super Regional series against Cal State-Fullerton at Fullerton, Calif.

The third and deciding game will be played today with the winner advancing to the College World Series.

Jeff Larish hit his 20th homer of the season in the sixth inning to give Arizona State a 2-0 lead and Eric Sogard’s two-run double highlighted the Sun Devils’ four-run eighth.

Averill (10-4) gave up one run on five hits. He retired 12 straight batters between Blake Davis’ single in the third and Brett Pill’s leadoff single in the seventh.

Florida 8, Florida State 5

At Gainesville, Fla., Brian Leclerc’s two-run homer capped a four-run first inning and helped put Florida in the College World Series for the first time in seven years.

The Gators improved to 5-0 in the NCAA tournament and extended their postseason winning streak against the Seminoles to seven games. Florida (45-20) will play Tennessee.

Nebraska 6, Miami 3

At Lincoln, Neb., Alex Gordon, Joe Simokaitis and Ryan Bohanan homered and freshman Johnny Dorn pitched 6 1/3 solid innings as Nebraska earned a trip to the College World Series for the third time in five years with a 6-3 victory over Miami.

The Cornhuskers (56-13), who won the best-of-3 NCAA Super Regional 2-0, return to the World Series – 50 miles away in Omaha – after making consecutive appearances in 2001-02. The Hurricanes (41-19-1) will miss the CWS for the first time since 2002 and only the fourth time since 1993.

Tennessee 13, Georgia Tech 3

At Atlanta, Michael Rivera’s three-run homer highlighted a six-run third inning and Tennessee earned its fourth trip to the College World Series.

The Volunteers (46-19) pounded out 16 hits and freshman left-hander James Adkins allowed three runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings to record the win. He also had 11 strikeouts with a walk.
