Yogurt with chocolate? Not a very good idea

Lorie Hutson Food editor

Yogurt for dessert? Probably not.

Spokesman-Review reader food panel tasters said they are not turning in their ice cream spoons anytime soon for a dip of vanilla, strawberry or cherry yogurt mixed with chocolate pieces – not even Dannon’s new “rich and creamy” La Crème.

Dannon says the premium chocolate pieces along with the smooth and creamy texture of yogurt will soothe a dessert jones with 48 percent less saturated fat that regular ice cream. “Dannon La Crème, the yogurt that is dessert,” Dannon says on the carton.

Panel members said, “Forget it.”

“What is this?” asked Laura Hollman. “It tastes like mediocre yogurt with bad chocolate sprinkles. Definitely not a dessert. Maybe a mediocre mid-day snack.”

“(It’s) like eating straight sour cream with little bits of chocolate – bad, bad, bad idea,” said Donald Clegg.

A few tasters appreciated that the yogurt wasn’t too sweet. “Tangy yogurt with flecks of chocolate,” said Marcia Oranen. “I liked it.”

Others said the yogurt was much creamier than the nonfat flavors they usually eat at home.

The strawberry flavor didn’t fare well either. Both yogurts were ranked at two-and-a-half stars by the panel.

“Subtle strawberry flavor; I’m not sure the chocolate sprinkles add much,” said Tina Johnson.

Marilyn Moore said she just couldn’t imagine following dinner with the flavored yogurt. “I just can’t see this as a dessert; even a sprig of mint doesn’t do the trick.”

Hollman wasn’t won over by the strawberry version and mistook the berry flavor for cherry.

“A bad attempt at a cherry-cordial-like taste,” she said. “Altogether bad. Do not eat… for dessert at least.”

Dannon La Crème is sold in the supermarket with other yogurts. It comes in a 15-ounce container and flavors include vanilla, strawberry and cherry, all with chocolate pieces.
