WAVE grant recipients named

The following Spokane area students have won a Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) scholarship, which provides two years of free tuition at a university, community or technical college, or licensed private vocational school in Washington state.

Christopher Baldwin, a senior at Mt. Spokane High School, is the co-owner of a small lawn-care company which employs four; Genevieve Bowler, a student at Spokane Falls Community; Megan Carpenter, a student at Ferris High School; Ian Wagner, a senior at Reardan High School; Aleksandr Makarov, a senior at Rogers High School; Lela Shastany, a student at North Central High School; Dustin Gorzynski, a student at Spokane Community College; Christopher Jackson, at student at University High School; Carolyn Campa, a student at Spokane Community College; and Christine Mertins, a student at the Spokane Skills Center.

•The following students have been named to the honor roll at Havermale High School and Medicine Wheel Academy for 2005.

Grade 12, 3.5 grade-point average or better: Michelle Bronny, Veronica Lesperance and Jessika Sanders.

Grade 11, 3.5 g.p.a. or better: Amanda Pattarnon, Nicole Presta, Amber Shay and Lynnora Simmons.

Grade 10, 4.0 g.p.a.: Kristine Jangula and Sarah Poston; 3.5 g.p.a. or better: Jennifer Cordero and Corie Hull.

Grade 9, 3.5 g.p.a. or better: Joshua Bowen and Johnathan Schneider.

• The following students placed in Gonzaga University’s Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program’s fifth annual Business Plan Competition, involving 79 teams, and held for the first time in collaboration with Eastern Washington University’s Center for Entrepreneurial Activities and Whitworth College’s School of Global Commerce and Management. The teams are listed with their places, grant winnings and project name:

First place ($10,000) for Original Lacrosse: Evan Castiglia, Ryan Leong, Drew Shemchuk, GU.

Second place ($5,000) for Medex: Tommy McWilliams, Ryan Lee, GU

Third place ($2,500) for Experience Art: Christi Anne Hofland, Julia Bauler, GU.

Community-based (Business venture ideas originated by entrepreneurs in the community)

First place ($7,500) for Remote Monitoring Technologies: Stacy Francis, Brad Herr, Chantel Lindquist, Mike McCarthy, Whitney Parsons; GU.

Second place ($3,500) for Al Hayek Arts: Bassam Al Hayek, Suman Polepaka, Tobias Mayer, Whitworth.

Third place ($1,500) for Vocere: Spencer Abel, Nick Foley, Brian McCarthy, Sean Stokke, Pardner Wynn, GU.

Social Enterprise (Nonprofit ventures)

First place ($7,500) for Spokane County Community Market: Baraka Poulin, Shawn Wheeler, Chris Shellooe, Danielle Rankin, Kaitlin Vadla, GU.

Second place ($3,500) for Mentor Partnering Resource: Jordanna Chord, GU.

Third place ($1,500) for Sunset Dental Services: Marci Lynch, Emily Lynch, Gary Lynch, EWU.
