The Spokesman-Review

American League

White Sox 5, Angels 4: At Chicago, Timo Perez singled in two runs in the ninth inning to give Chicago a victory over Los Angeles.

Orioles 8, Red Sox 1: At Boston, Rodrigo Lopez won his second straight start following a long winless stretch, and Baltimore broke a season-high, three-game losing streak with a victory over Boston. David Newhan hit his first career grand slam and drove in five runs, and Baltimore built a 7-0 lead after three innings against Bronson Arroyo (4-2), who got just eight outs. Newhan, who had six RBIs this year coming in, hit his grand slam in the third and added an RBI single in the eighth off Alan Embree.

Athletics 5, Devil Rays 4 (11): At Oakland, Calif., Mark Kotsay drove home Marco Scutaro with a two-out single in the 11th inning, and Oakland snapped an eight-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay. Huston Street (2-1) got three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings for the A’s, who didn’t allow a run after the fifth inning.

National League

Pirates 3, Marlins 2: At Pittsburgh, Freddy Sanchez’s opposite-field single in the 10th inning drove in the winning run and Pittsburgh won a one-run game at home for the first time this season, rallying to beat Florida.

Reds 9, Astros 0: At Houston, Joe Randa homered and had three RBIs, and Aaron Harang struck out 10 to spoil a solid effort by Roger Clemens (4 hits, 2 runs in eight innings) and help Cincinnati beat Houston. The Reds scored seven runs in the ninth inning.

Nationals 3, Braves 2: At Washington, Marlon Byrd delivered two RBI doubles, and Tomo Ohka allowing just one unearned run and two hits over seven innings to lead Washington past Atlanta.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 3: At Los Angeles, Greg Maddux got his 308th victory and Chicago moved above the .500 mark for the first time in a month, beating Los Angeles. Jerry Hairston, Michael Barrett and Aramis Ramirez homered for the Cubs, who have won four straight and have a winning record for the first time since they were 12-11, after games of April 30.

Cardinals 5, Rockies 4: At Denver, Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to add to the Colorado bullpen’s misery and lift St. Louis to a victory. Pujols put a 1-2 pitch from Jay Witasick (0-2) barely over the left-field wall for a 4-3 lead. The homer halted Witasick’s 10-game streak without allowing an earned run and marked the major league-high 11th blown save of the season for Colorado’s beleaguered relievers.

Padres 2, Brewers 1: At San Diego, pinch-hitter Miguel Ojeda doubled in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning and San Diego beat Milwaukee for its 21st win in May. The Padres extended their lead in the N.L. West to a season-high three games over idle Arizona. The Padres won their fifth straight game overall and tied the franchise record with their 10th straight win at home. San Diego improved to 21-6 in May, extending the franchise record for most wins in a month.
