Olson leads Bruins past Sun Devils

Associated Press

Drew Olson threw for 510 yards and five touchdowns Saturday and No. 14 UCLA defeated Arizona State 45-35 in a high-scoring show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

The Bruins (9-1, 6-1 Pac-10) rebounded from their stunning, 52-14 loss at Arizona a week earlier with another explosive offensive performance.

After building a 21-7 first-quarter lead against Arizona State, the Bruins edged away from a 28-28 tie in the third quarter to get back on the winning track.

The Sun Devils (5-5, 3-4) got a 334-yard, three-touchdown-pass performance from redshirt freshman Rudy Carpenter and might have kept pace with UCLA but for three lost fumbles.

Olson, who had thrown for a school-record six touchdowns in a rout of Oregon State on Oct. 22, hooked up with Joe Cowan for a 91-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage against ASU. He then threw a 56-yarder to Chris Markey, a 6-yarder and a 13-yarder to Marcedes Lewis, and a 7-yarder to Brandon Breazell.

Lewis had seven catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns, Markey three for 120 yards, and Cowan three for 109.

Sun Devils wide receiver Derek Hagan had seven catches for 97 yards and set a Pac-10 record with 249 career receptions. Stanford’s Troy Walters had 248 from 1996-99.

The site of Southern California’s last failure became just another stop on the Trojans’ victory tour.

Matt Leinart passed for 246 yards and ran for two touchdowns, and LenDale White ran for three more scores as the Trojans (10-0, 7-0) rolled past the Bears (6-4, 3-4) in Berkeley, Calif., for USC’s 32nd straight win.

Reggie Bush ran for 82 yards for the Trojans, who endured none of the troubles and scares caused by the Golden Bears in the previous two seasons.

With every businesslike drive and aggressive defensive stop, USC coolly buried its most competitive conference rival in recent years.

The USC defense intercepted Joe Ayoob four times and kept Cal out of the end zone until 1:34 remained, while Leinart failed to throw a touchdown pass for just the fourth time in 36 career starts.

Leinart, White and receiver Dwayne Jarrett all surpassed 1,000-yard statistical milestones for the season during an easy second half.

Stanford 20, Oregon State 17

Trent Edwards found Justin McCullum with a pair of touchdown passes and the Cardinal moved a step closer to bowl eligibility with a victory over the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore.

Edwards, who injured his thumb late in the third quarter and was replaced by T.C. Ostrander, completed 16 of 28 passes for 196 yards. McCullum had seven catches for 119 yards for the Cardinal (5-4, 4-3), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Beavers (5-5, 3-4) lost quarterback Matt Moore to what appeared to be a right knee injury in the second quarter, and kicker Alexis Serna uncharacteristically missed three field goals after making six attempts the week before. Oregon State also had 11 penalties for 123 yards.
