Eagles sweep Grizzlies

Lizzy Mellor had 16 kills as Eastern Washington hit .306 as a team en route to a 31-29, 30-15, 30-20 sweep of Montana in Big Sky Conference action in Missoula.

Addie Wesbster added 13 kills and hit .444, and Ashley Jensen had 11 kills, five blocks and a .455 attack percentage for the Eagles (12-5, 4-2).

Jade Roskam led Montana (10-9, 0-5) with 10 kills but was the only member of the Grizzlies who reached double figures as UM hit .096.

Eastern, which also outblocked Montana 9-3, is a game behind Sacramento State (5-1) for first place in the Big Sky.

•Christie Dawson had 13 kills and hit .375, and Moira McCarthy chipped in with 10 kills and hit .500 as San Diego shut down Gonzaga’s offense, handing the Bulldogs their second consecutive defeat, a 30-11, 30-24, 30-19 sweep in West Coast Conference action in San Diego.

The Toreros (13-2, 3-1), ranked 15th in the country, hit .370 for the match.

Briawna Mueller led GU (9-10, 1-2) with eight kills as not a single Bulldog reached double digits in kills. Lacey Bell added six kills for Gonzaga.

•Alicia Powers led three Golden Bears in double-figure kills as No. 13 California swept Washington State 30-16, 30-26, 30-23 in Pac-10 Conference action in Berkeley, Calif.

Powers finished with 13 kills and five blocks, Morgan Beck 12 kills and Jenna Brown 10 kills and 17 digs as the Golden Bears (12-3, 5-1) held the Cougars to a .110 hitting percentage while hitting .262.

Setter Samantha Carter had 47 assists for the match as Cal moved into a second-place tie in the Pac-10.

Natalia Owens led WSU (8-10, 1-4) with 10 kills and 10 digs and Jen Barcus added nine kills and hit .474.

•Amanda Cochran had 11 kills, six blocks and hit .588 as Community Colleges of Spokane held off Columbia Basin 30-13, 30-24, 30-26 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges matchup at Spokane Falls CC.

Emily Wittkopf added nine kills for CCS (18-8, 4-2) while Andrea Light, Vanessa Fleetwood and Cassie Duncan each had seven. Nicolette Wittwer added six kills and 13 digs for CCS.

Columbia Basin, led by Megan Weitz’s 16 kills, fell to 4-18, 2-4.

•Christal Morrison tied a career high with 26 kills and hit .550 as No. 2 Washington held on to beat No. 3 Stanford 30-24, 30-28, 32-30, 30-15 in Pac-10 action in Stanford, Calif.

Brie Hagerty added 15 kills as UW (14-0, 5-0) won at Stanford (16-2, 5-1) for the second time in team history and the first time since 1989.

•Kati Tikker (13), Haley Larsen (12) and Meghan Brown (11) each finished in double-digit kills as Idaho (10-7, 2-3) beat Boise State (4-8, 0-5) 30-24, 30-24, 27-30, 30-22 in Western Athletic Conference action in Boise.

•JoAnna Kaczor had 18 kills and a .593 hitting percentage, and Aneli Cubi-Otineru added 16 kills and a .483 attack percentage as top-ranked Southern Idaho swept No. 5 North Idaho (22-4, 2-1) 30-17, 30-18, 30-13 in Scenic West Athletic Conference action in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Cross country

The Whitworth men took first place and the Pirates women second at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational at the PLU golf course in Tacoma.

For the men, Doug Blackburn placed second, finishing the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 18.9 seconds, almost 30 seconds behind Destrey Johnson, who ran unattached.

The Pirates, who were given a boost by Jeff Grassley, who finished ninth in a time of 26:41.8, finished with 42 team points, 21 ahead of Lewis and Clark.

On the women’s side, Kristi Dickey’s time of 22:18.8 broke the meet record but was still more than 15 seconds behind Lewis & Clark’s Carla McHattie, who finished the 6,000 in a time of 22:03.5.

The Pirates, also aided by Elaine Heinemann’s seventh-place finish (23:28.9), finished with 50 points, just seven behind Lewis & Clark.
