Mellor’s 21 kills key Eastern sweep
Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) had 21 kills and Ashley Jensen added 11 kills and seven blocks as Eastern Washington (14-6) swept Gonzaga 30-23, 30-20, 30-16 in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday at Reese Court in Cheney.
Christina Albers ran the potent Eagles offense with 42 assists. Becky Jones had nine kills and nine digs to lead the Bulldogs (10-12), who have lost 13 straight to Eastern.
•Whitworth outside hitter Julie Marsh (Cheney) is the Northwest Conference player of the week after leading the Pirates to three wins, hitting .419 with 39 kills.
Football
Quarterback Joel Clark (Mt. Spokane) of Whitworth was chosen the NWC player of the week and defensive back Jay Tully (Mead) was named the top defensive player. Clark completed 24 of 32 passes for 363 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 76 yards with another touchdown in a victory over the University of Puget Sound.
Tully had 12 tackles and intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth’s Ali Seyedali and Adam Loeffler were NWC offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. Seyedali, a midfielder, scored two goals and had two assists. Loeffler, a defender, led a Pirates defense that allowed only 10 shots (five on goal) in two shutout wins.
Golf
Gonzaga shot a season-best 309 in the final round to finish 10th at the Taylormade/Adidas Lady Aztec at The Auld in San Diego.
Sarah Sheffield (78) led the Bulldogs with a 17th-place finish.
