Eastern volleyball sweeps Idaho State

Addie Webster and Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) each had double-doubles to lead Eastern Washington to a 30-17, 30-23, 30-20 sweep of Idaho State (8-14, 2-6) in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match Thursday night at Reese Court in Cheney.

Webster had 12 kills and 17 digs for the Eagles (15-6, 5-3), while Mellor had 11 kills and 12 digs. Ashley Jensen led Eastern with 15 kills.

•Tanya Allen had 11 kills and Amber Simpson added eight kills and six blocks as New Mexico State (12-4, 5-3) swept Idaho 30-21, 30-19, 30-17 in a Western Athletic Conference match at Las Cruces, N.M.

Haley Larsen’s 10 kills led the attack for the Vandals (10-10, 2-5), who lost their third straight match. Saxony Brown had 21 assists and 10 digs.

Men’s soccer

George Josten’s header 42 seconds into the second half held up as Gonzaga defeated Portland 1-0 in a West Coast Conference match at Martin Field.

Vito Higgins had three saves to earn his second shutout of the season for the Bulldogs (3-6-3, 1-3-1), who snapped a five-match losing streak to the Pilots (4-7-1, 2-4) dating back to the 2001 College Cup.

Women’s soccer

Natalie Ellis scored twice, including the winning goal in the 75th minute, as Weber State (9-4-1, 2-1) defeated Eastern Washington 2-1 in Big Sky play at Ogden, Utah.

Jennie Summers (Central Valley) tied the match for the Eagles (3-9-3, 1-2-1) on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.
