Wildcats hold off West Valley’s upset bid

Kyle Redmond’s 13-yard touchdown pass in overtime lifted Mt. Spokane to a 28-21 non-league football victory in a Friday season opener at West Valley.

The Eagles, looking to break into the win column after going 0-10 a year ago, tied the game late in the fourth quarter when 6-foot-6 wide receiver E.J. Richardson pulled in a 42-yard pass from Cam Weiber for his second touchdown of the game.

West Valley had two chances to take the lead in the final 90 seconds.

Mt. Spokane got three touchdowns from senior fullback Nick Ellis, who pulled in a 15-yard pass for one score, then reached the end zone on runs of 45 and 2 yards.

In other non-league games: Shadle Park broke open a scoreless game in the second quarter en route to a 21-7 victory over Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls. The Highlanders led 21-0 before the Eagles scored on a 65-yard return of a Shadle fumble. … Ellensburg erupted for 34 second-quarter points to take control of visiting North Central, pulling away for a 59-20 victory. Josh Kopcznyski rushed for 219 yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Shane Thomas returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to give NC a 7-0 lead. Thomas also pulled in a 50-yard pass from Greg Conley in the fourth quarter.

Pullman scored three times in the first quarter en route to a 40-7 victory over visiting Hazen. Justin Erwin ran 61 yards for the game’s first score, then pulled in a 24-yard pass for the second, staking the Greyhounds to a 13-0 lead. Senior Mike Thomas bulled in for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns for Pullman. … Luke Daniels fired a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter to lift Kettle Falls to a 14-7 victory over visiting Chewelah. Daniels fired a 40-yard strike to Tanner Bircher for one score and followed it with a 16-yard toss to Casey McKern.

Trevor Smith scored on runs of 20 and 30 yards to lead Odessa to a 26-14 victory over visiting Bridgeport. Smith’s first scoring romp lifted the Tigers to a 19-8 lead at halftime. … Leigh Talkington ran for two touchdowns and returned an intercepted pass 40 yards for a third to lead Sprague-Harrington to a 28-0 victory over Post Falls Christian at Sprague. Talkington dashed 70 yards from scrimmage in the second quarter for his first score and added a 26-yard romp in the third. … Miles St. John lugged the ball 33 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Columbia Lions past visiting St. John-Endicott 40-22 at Hunters. St. John plunged in from a yard out in the first quarter and added a 12-yard dash in the second for the Lions, the state Class B-8 runners-up a year ago, then capped the day’s scoring with a 75-yard rumble in the fourth. … The Campbells ran loose at Cusick, leading Tri-Cities Prep to a 46-0 shutout. Joe Campbell carried 13 times for 233 yards and TD runs of 36, 30 and 70 yards. Matt Campbell carried eight times for 147 yards and two TDs, including a game-long 72-yard scamper in the third quarter, and passed for a third in a game that was called after three quarters.

Three-time defending state Class B-8 champion LaCrosse-Washtucna wasted little time picking up where it left off a year ago, steamrolling visiting Wellpinit 56-6 in a game halted after the third quarter. Jared Ayers-Stamper completed 8 of 12 passes with five TDs – four of them to Matt Martin, who pulled in five passes for 129 yards. … Jubilee Christian recovered an on-sides kick attempt by Almira/Coulee-Hartline with 30 seconds left to secure a 28-24 victory at Hartline. Cody Seely of ACH piled up 116 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Colton-Pullman Christian roared to a 28-0 lead after one quarter and cruised past visiting Timberline 64-14. Junior receiver Joe Smetana caught four passes for 171 yards and three TDs as C-PC piled up 554 total yards. … Soap Lake staked itself to a 19-0 lead at Springdale and held on for a 19-7 victory. Derek May scored on a 5-yard run for the Chargers. … Wilbur-Creston blanked visiting Lake Roosevelt 14-0.

In Idaho games, Zach Clow passed for 139 yards and three TDs and ran for two more scores to lead Priest River to a 49-0 shutout of visiting Potlatch. …… Matt Rice booted a 29-yard field goal with 56 seconds left to lift Bonners Ferry to an 8-6 victory over visiting Lakeland. …Orofino scored a 64-0 shutout at St. Maries behind Wade Garland‘s six-touchdown performance.
