Yankees 7, Orioles 6: At New York, Jorge Posada hit a tying home run in the fifth, then added a three-run, upper-deck drive in the sixth as New York defeated Baltimore for its 10th win in 11 games. New York leads Boston by one game in the East.

Twins 4, White Sox 1 (11): At Chicago, Matthew LeCroy hit a go-ahead RBI single in a three-run 11th and Minnesota defeated Chicago. The White Sox’s Central lead over Cleveland was trimmed to 1 1/2 games. Chicago led the division by 15 games on Aug. 1, but has lost 10 of 14.

Indians 11, Royals 6: At Kansas City, Mo., Travis Hafner hit his sixth home run in five games and Cliff Lee (18-4) won his ninth straight decision as Cleveland notched its 15th win in 17 games.

Angels 7, Rangers 4: At Anaheim, Calif., Adam Kennedy singled in the go-ahead run with the bases loaded in the sixth, helping Los Angeles defeat Texas to extend its lead in the West to three games over idle Oakland.

National League

Astros 2, Pirates 1: At Pittsburgh, Lance Berkman drove in both runs as Houston defeated Pittsburgh for its eighth win in nine games. The Astros maintained their two-game lead over Philadelphia in the wild-card chase.

Phillies 4, Braves 0: At Atlanta, Jon Lieber pitched eight scoreless innings and Philadelphia scored four runs in the ninth to take the series 2-1. Jimmy Rollins led off the first with a single, extending his hitting streak to a post-1900, franchise-record 27 games, and his Phillies closed within four games of the East-leading Braves with nine left.

Cubs 3, Brewers 0: At Milwaukee, Greg Maddux (13-13) needed just 78 pitches in eight innings to record his 318th career win, leading Chicago past Milwaukee. Maddux has posted at least 15 victories in a record 17 seasons.

Rockies 4, Padres 2: At Denver, Aaron Cook took a shutout into the ninth and Todd Helton hit a two-run homer as Colorado dropped West-leading San Diego back to .500. San Diego leads San Francisco by five games.

Nationals 2, Giants 0: At Washington, top draft pick Ryan Zimmerman singled twice, and career minor leaguer Rick Short delivered two doubles and an RBI as Washington kept San Francisco from gaining ground in the West.

Marlins 2, Mets 1: At New York, Dontrelle Willis won his major league-leading 22nd game and kept alive Florida’s flickering wild-card hopes with a win over New York.

Reds 6, Cardinals 2: At Cincinnati, Edwin Encarnacion’s bases-loaded double completed a five-run rally in the eighth that gave Cincinnati a victory over St. Louis.

Diamondbacks 7, Dodgers 4 (12): At Phoenix, Alex Cintron’s two-out, three-run homer in the 12th lifted Arizona past Los Angeles.
