Safin, Tursunov give Russia lead

Marat Safin and Dmitry Tursunov beat Argentina’s David Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday in Moscow, putting Russia ahead 2-1 and one match from its second Davis Cup title.

The reverse singles today at Olympic Stadium will decide the outcome, with Argentina trying for its first Davis Cup crown.

Dave Roberts agreed to an $18 million, three-year contract with the San Francisco Giants after two seasons in San Diego, reuniting the outfielder with manager Bruce Bochy.

Sophomore Eric Avila scored the deciding goal on UC Santa Barbara’s fifth penalty kick and the unseeded Gauchos beat Wake Forest 4-3 in St. Louis, advancing to the College Cup final to face UCLA today.

David Estrada scored twice in 67 seconds to lift UCLA to a 4-0 upset over Virginia to reach the finals.

Cotto claims title

Undefeated Miguel Cotto stopped Carlos Quintana in the fifth round to win the vacant WBA welterweight title in Atlantic City, N.J.

“Winky Wright knocked down Ike Quartey late in the second round in Tampa, Fla., to win the 12-round middleweight fight between two old friends with a unanimous decision.

Massimiliano Blardone won a World Cup giant slalom in Beaver Creek, Colo., after Bode Miller squandered his first-run lead by catching his arm on a gate his second time down.

“Lindsey Kildow won the World Cup downhill in Lake Louise, Alberta, finishing a whopping 1.33 seconds ahead of Austria’s Renate Goetschl.

Ex-Pats player dies

Todd Davison, a former player with the Regina Pats, has lost a lengthy battle with cancer.

Davison died at home in Winnipeg with his family at his side, the Pats said in a news release.

“Mao Asada skated away with the NHK Trophy women’s figure skating event in Nagano, Japan, qualifying to defend her Grand Prix final title.

“Two-time Olympian Michael Phelps won two events at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., giving him six gold medals during the three-day meet.
