Shockers awed by the Lobos

Tony Dandridge scored 17 points Friday night and New Mexico handed No. 8 Wichita State its first loss of the season, 71-68 in the third round of the Las Vegas Classic.

J.R. Giddens, who did not play the final 15:39 after injuring his left foot, added 14 points for the Lobos (9-2), while Jamal Smith added 13 points and five assists.

Kyle Wilson had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Shockers (9-1), whose last loss was to George Mason in the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 last March.

Sean Ogirri added 18 points for Wichita State, which was 27 of 60 from the field.

(2) North Carolina 69, Saint Louis 48: At St. Louis, Tyler Hansbrough had 15 points and matched his career best with 13 rebounds in the Tar Heels’ victory over the Billikens (9-3).

Danny Green added 14 points and Brandan Wright and Ty Lawson each had 12 for the Tar Heels (10-1).

Ian Vouyoukas had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Saint Louis.

(13) Texas A&M 87, Auburn 58: At Auburn, Ala., Acie Law scored 21 points and the Aggies (10-2) had five players score in double figures in a victory over the Tigers (9-4).

Josh Carter was 4 of 6 from 3-point range and added 12 points for the Aggies.

Quan Prowell led Auburn with 20 points.

(16) Butler 76, Evansville 65: At Indianapolis, A.J. Graves scored 22 points and Mike Green added 16 to lead the Bulldogs (12-1) to a victory over the Purple Aces (8-4).

Jason Holsinger had 17 points for Evansville.

(19) Marquette 77, Morgan St. 57: At Milwaukee, Jerel McNeal scored 15 of his career-high 25 points in the decisive first half to lead the Golden Eagles (12-2) to a victory over the Golden Bears (2-8).

Dan Fitzgerald added 11 points for the Golden Eagles.

Reggie Holmes had three 3-pointers and scored 13 points and Ronald Timus and Jamar Smith each had 12 points for the Golden Bears.

(23) Syracuse 85, Hofstra 60: At Syracuse, N.Y., Demetris Nichols had 20 points, Josh Wright and Paul Harris each had 12, and the Orange (10-3) beat the Pride (6-4).

Antoine Agudio had 22 points to lead Hofstra.

Loren Stokes finished with 19 points and Carlos Rivera had 11 points and nine rebounds before fouling out in the final 2 minutes.

(25) Nevada 73, Akron 71: At Akron, Ohio, Nick Fazekas scored 24 points to help the Wolf Pack (10-1) hold off the Zips (7-3).

Ramon Sessions added 22 points for Nevada.

Dru Joyce scored 23 points and Travis Romeo had 11 to lead Akron.
