OUTFITTER

Orvis endures

Before President Lincoln, there was an Orvis.

This year marks the 150th anniversary for one of the world’s most recognized fly fishing outfitters, founded by Charles Orvis.

Beginning as a tackle shop in Manchester, Vt., Orvis has grown to a $250 million a year mail order and retail company bolstered by 44 stores and 500 dealers worldwide.

Three thousand people each year attend Orvis fly fishing and shooting schools.

The company has commitment to conservation, donating $10 million — 5 percent of pretax profits — to fish and wildlife habitat projects in the past 10 years.
