Prince’s four hits lead WSU rout

Jared Prince had four hits and a pair of runs batted in as Washington State routed Hawaii-Hilo 11-3 in a non-conference baseball game Friday in Hilo, Hawaii.

Prince hit the first of his two doubles for two runs in a six-run first inning for the Cougars (6-1). Matt Thomas put the game out of reach with a two-run home run to left field in the third, giving WSU a 9-1 lead.

Nick Ison (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in six innings with six strikeouts.

The Cougars will attempt to sweep the four-game series with the Vulcans (2-11) this afternoon.

•Luke Hopkins hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lead New Mexico State (4-4) to a 5-3 victory over No. 29 Gonzaga in a non-conference game at Las Cruces, N.M.

Scott Campbell, Jackson Brennan, Zach Woodward and Bobby Carlson each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs (6-2), who played their first game as a ranked team since 1981.

Patrick Donovan (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 61/3 innings. The series will resume this afternoon.

•Caleb Reaber earned a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning and Trevor Sheffels added a two-run single as Whitworth defeated Wayland Baptist 13-10 at the Arizona Desert Classic in Glendale.

Reaber also hit a solo home run in the ninth to give the Pirates (2-1) a 10-8 lead, but Chasen DeLeon hit his second homer of the game to force extra innings.

Whitworth will continue Desert Classic play today against Louisiana College.

Men’s basketball

Joel Ryman scored 20 points in a rare start, including 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, as Community Colleges of Spokane cruised to an 83-71 victory over Blue Mountain in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Eastern Region game at Pendleton, Ore.

Jeremy Mangum had 16 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists for the Sasquatch (19-5, 8-2), who shot 53 percent from the floor. Jordan Hammond added 18 points and eight rebounds, and Erik Bell had 15 points off the bench.

Michael Smith and Cody Dranginis each scored 18 points to lead the Timberwolves (8-15, 1-9).

•Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison and center J.P Batista have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 14 first team. This is the eighth straight season Gonzaga has been represented on the team.

Eastern Washington freshman guard Rodney Stuckey became the first player in school history to be named to the NABC All-District 13 first team.

Women’s basketball

Emily Wittkopf had 13 points and five rebounds, and Brittany O’Neal added 11 points and five assists as Community Colleges of Spokane routed Blue Mountain CC 71-43 in an NWAACC Eastern Region game at Pendleton, Ore.

Ali Middlestadt also scored 11 for the Sasquatch (15-9, 5-4), who had 22 assists on 28 field goals. Lindsay Petersen led CCS with eight assists.

Britany Tremayne had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Timberwolves (6-18, 1-9).

Junior hockey

Ray Tremblay, Patrik Martin and Kyle St. Denis each had a goal and an assist as Beaver Valley defeated Spokane 4-1 in Game 1 of a best-of-7 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League first-round series at Fruitvale, British Columbia.

Leif Sherman avoided the shutout for the Braves with a power-play goal with 5 seconds left. Stephen Wagner and J.C. Thomas provided the assists.

Beaver Valley will host Game 2 on Sunday.

•Jon Clark scored in overtime on a one-handed shot to give Spokane a 4-3 victory over Bozeman in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Northern Pacific Hockey League divisional semifinal series at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Shane Davis scored twice for the Flyers, and Zach Lelwica had 38 saves to earn the win. Bozeman will host Game 2 on Sunday.
