Michigan State edges Rutgers

Michigan State and Rutgers, two nationally prominent programs, had never met before Saturday. They expect to play again – only at higher stakes.

This time, Michigan State was the winner.

The No. 11 Spartans (12-3) got 22 points from Lindsay Bowen in a 73-71 victory over the No. 8 Scarlet Knights (10-2). Rutgers’ Essence Carson missed a jumper from near the foul line as time expired, extending Michigan State’s school-record homecourt winning streak to 22 games.

The Spartans beat a top 10 team for the first time this season after losing their first three opportunities.

Liz Shimek scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Michigan State. Victoria Lucas-Perry had 15 points. Carson had 17 points for Rutgers. Matee Ajavon added 15 points off the bench.

(3) LSU 66, (15) Minnesota 45: At Baton Rouge, La., Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles each scored 21 points, and Scholanda Hoston helped key a second-half burst of 15 straight points by the Lady Tigers (13-0) in a win over the Golden Gophers (9-3).

(4) Baylor 61, (23) Texas 48: At Waco, Texas, Sophia Young scored 25 points, most of her baskets coming when Baylor needed a spark, and the Lady Bears (11-1, 1-1 Big 12) beat the Longhorns (6-6, 0-2) to extend their home-court winning streak to 23 games.

Seton Hall 74, (12) Notre Dame 61: At South Bend, Ind., Heta Korpivaara scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half, including six points during a decisive 17-6 run, to lead the Pirates (5-8, 0-2 Big East) to the upset. The loss was the third straight for the Irish (9-4, 0-2), their longest losing streak in eight years.

(13) DePaul 67, Marquette 52: At Milwaukee, Khara Smith matched a season high with 29 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Demons (15-1, 2-1 Big East) to their eighth straight victory. Freshman Krystal Ellis had a career-high 17 points to lead Marquette (10-3, 0-2).

(16) Stanford 76, Oregon 64: At Eugene, Ore., Candice Wiggins scored a career-high 37 points to rally the Cardinal (10-4, 5-1 Pac-10) to a victory over the Ducks (10-4, 1-3). Wiggins also had seven rebounds and five assists.

(18) Oklahoma 84, Colorado 61: At Norman, Okla., Courtney Paris notched her NCAA-leading 12th double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds, and Erin Higgins became the Sooners’ all-time leading 3-point shooter in a win over the Buffaloes (5-9, 0-2 Big 12). Kendra Moore added 12 points for Oklahoma (12-3, 2-0).

(21) New Mexico 73, Colorado State 57: At Fort Collins, Colo., Abbie Letz scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lobos over the Rams (7-6, 1-1 Mountain West). Dionne Marsh scored 15 of her 16 points in the second half and Katie Montgomery added 15 points for the Lobos (12-3, 2-0).

Brigham Young 61, (22) Utah 60: At Salt Lake City, Mallary Gillespie’s putback at the buzzer lifted the Cougars over the Utes (9-4, 0-2 Mountain West). BYU (12-1, 2-0) was trailing 60-59 when Ambrosia Anderson missed a 20-footer with 2 seconds left. Gillespie grabbed the rebound and scored as time expired.
