Blazers sign top picks, Roy and Aldridge

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed their top two draft picks, forward LaMarcus Aldridge and guard Brandon Roy. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Portland acquired Aldridge, the second overall pick out of Texas, from the Chicago Bulls for forward Viktor Khryapa and the draft rights to Tyrus Thomas.

The Blazers acquired Roy, the sixth overall pick, in a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the seventh overall pick, Randy Foye.

•The Chicago Bulls agreed to send center Tyson Chandler to the New Orleans Hornets for veteran forward P.J. Brown and swingman J.R. Smith, the Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site.

•First-round draft pick Jordan Farmar signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was the 26th overall pick in last week’s draft.

•Minnesota signed first-round draft pick Randy Foye. Foye was the seventh overall selection and was acquired by the Wolves in a trade with Portland.

•Oregon State women’s basketball coach LaVonda Wagner has been given a one-year contract extension through the 2011 season.

Gaborik signs new deal

The Minnesota Wild signed right wing Marian Gaborik to a three-year, $19 million contract hours before he was expected to file for salary arbitration.

•Andy McDonald, who led the Anaheim Ducks in assists and game-winning goals last season, signed a three-year contract with the team.

•The Phoenix Coyotes signed right winger Georges Laraque to a two-year contract

•The Calgary Flames signed newly acquired forward Alex Tanguay to a three-year deal.

•The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed left winger Erik Cole to a three-year, $12 million contract.

•The Dallas Stars signed free agents Jeff Halpern and Matthew Barnaby.

•Jaroslav Spacek agreed to a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres.

CFL commissioner will step down

Canadian Football League commissioner Tom Wright said that he will not seek a new contract, ending his sometimes rocky, three plus-year tenure.

•The American Forces Network is getting out of the sports play-by-play business on the radio. The decision was made based on worldwide audience surveys of military members who prefer watching sports over listening.

•Japanese home run king Sadaharu Oh will have surgery to remove a stomach tumor and does not know when he will return to his job as manager of the Softbank Hawks.

•Portland State has hired Steven Ascher as head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis teams as the Vikings prepare to bring the sport back for the 2007-08 season.
