Fields, AppleSox beat RiverHawks

Matt Fields pitched seven strong innings, striking out 11 and Hawkins Gebbers had four hits to lead the Wenatchee AppleSox to an 8-3 win over the Spokane RiverHawks Friday night at Avista Stadium in West Coast Collegiate Baseball League action.

Shawn Gizynski was 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored for the RiverHawks (22-12). He scored his run in the bottom of the ninth when Brent Mertens knocked him in with a triple. Fields collected the win, while Luke Farden picked up the loss for Spokane.

Wenatchee is now 21-13, only one game back of Spokane in the WCCBL standings.

Spokane hosts Wenatchee tonight in the second game of the three-game series.

Junior golf

Six Spokane-area junior golfers finished in the top three in their age division at the Washington Junior Golf Association State Championships at the Fairwood Golf and Country Club in Renton.

In the boys 14-15 age division, Spokane’s Hank Frame finished tied for third with a three-day total of 226. In the 12-13 age group, Tyler Carlson of Clarkston also tied for third with a total of 228.

On the girl’s side, Spokane’s Brittany Wilcox finished second in the 16-17 age division with a total of 247. Chessey Thomas, of Spokane, also finished second with a total of 243 in the 14-15 age-group.

Colbert’s Sierra Bezdicek finished second in the 8-11 age division with a total of 166 and Savana Bezdicek shot 246 to finish third in the 12-13 age-group.
