The Spokesman-Review

Red Sox 8, Phillies 7 (12): At Boston, David Ortiz beat the Phillies in Boston’s last at-bat for the second consecutive game, singling home the winning run in the 12th inning for a win over Philadelphia that extended Boston’s winning streak to nine games. The Red Sox led 6-0 after six and 6-5 in the ninth before Chase Utley homered to force extra innings.

Yankees 5, Braves 2: At New York, Jason Giambi homered twice and drove in five runs, Randy Johnson tossed seven shutout innings and New York beat Atlanta. Johnson allowed four hits, struck out a season-high nine and didn’t walk a batter. He didn’t allow a runner past first base until Edgar Renteria went to third on Chipper Jones’ two-out single in the sixth.

Tigers 10, Astros 4: At Detroit, Ivan Rodriguez’s two-run double highlighted Detroit’s five-run third inning and the Tigers beat Houston. Rodriguez homered off Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez in the seventh. Lance Berkman, who went 2 for 4, and Astros manager Phil Garner were ejected in the seventh after arguing over a play at first base.

Marlins 8, Devil Rays 5: At Miami, Hanley Ramirez beat out an infield single to start a five-run fifth-inning rally, and Josh Johnson survived a rocky start to help Florida beat Tampa Bay. Cody Ross had three hits and two RBIs, and Josh Willingham, Mike Jacobs and Jeremy Hermida each drove in two runs for the Marlins, who moved within one game of second-place Philadelphia in the N.L. East.

Indians 10, Cardinals 3: At St. Louis, Cliff Lee worked six strong innings to keep his perfect interleague record intact and Cleveland got two home runs from Travis Hafner in a victory over the Cardinals. The Cards have lost seven in a row for the first time since 2002.

Twins 8, Dodgers 2: At Minneapolis, Joe Mauer had four hits and a career-best five RBIs to lead Minnesota past Los Angeles – the Twins’ fifth straight win and 15th in their last 17 games. Nomar Garciaparra went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Los Angeles, which had a four-game winning streak end.

Angels 5, Rockies 4: At Anaheim, Calif., Mike Napoli’s two-run double highlighted a five-run eighth inning and Los Angeles rallied for a win over Colorado in the opener of the first interleague series between the teams since 2001.
