Hernandez works one great inning
Felix Hernandez struck out the side for Seattle, and San Diego starter Jake Peavy gave up two runs during a 2-2 tie in 10 innings Thursday during exhibition play at Peoria, Ariz.
Hernandez, 19, fanned Dave Roberts, Mike Cameron and Brian Giles on 13 pitches in the first, his only inning.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander from Venezuela went 4-4 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 starts last year after being called up from Triple-A Tacoma.
Clemens looks sharp
Roger Clemens was back on the mound at Houston’s camp in Kissimmee, Fla., striking out four of the 10 minor leaguers he faced and catching a hard liner.
With Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan watching, Clemens threw 38 pitches – 24 for strikes – in his second live tuneup for the World Baseball Classic. Clemens was set to leave later in the day to join the U.S. team in Scottsdale, Ariz.
•At Port St. Lucie, Fla., Pedro Martinez confirmed he will not pitch in the WBC because of his sore toe, leaving the Dominican Republic without three of its biggest stars. All-Stars Manny Ramirez and Vladimir Guerrero also recently withdrew from the Dominican team, expected to be one of the strongest at the inaugural, 16-nation tournament.
Clearing the bases
Florida slugger Miguel Cabrera agreed to a one-year contract that will pay him $472,000 this season. Cabrera batted .323 with 33 home runs and 116 RBIs last year. The third-year player be eligible for arbitration for the first time after this season. … Cincinnati pitching coach Vern Ruhle, 55, has cancer, but plans to stay with the team while getting treatment. Ruhle didn’t disclose the type of cancer he has, but said doctors expect him to make a full recovery. … A judge in Santa Ana, Calif., rejected a request by the city of Anaheim to force the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to change their name back to the Anaheim Angels. Orange County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Polos ruled he had no authority to reverse the ruling of a jury that three weeks ago decided in the team’s favor.
