Seton Hall upends No. 8 Pitt

Donald Copeland scored Seton Hall’s last seven points over the final 1:56 and the Pirates ended No. 8 Pittsburgh’s 16-game home winning streak with a 65-61 victory in Pittsburgh that greatly improved their NCAA Tournament chances.

Aaron Gray missed two free throws with 8.5 seconds remaining that would have tied it for Pittsburgh, and Copeland followed several seconds later with two free throws to deal the Panthers their second consecutive loss and third in four games.

Kelly Whitney scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Seton Hall won its second in a row following three consecutive losses that damaged the Pirates’ NCAA hopes.

Women

Camille Little had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 1 North Carolina overcame a sluggish start to beat Virginia 82-56 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Virginia had won five straight.

(2) Duke 69, Virginia Tech 56: At Greensboro, N.C., Monique Currie scored 13 points to help the Blue Devils overcome 31 turnovers and beat the Hokies in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament. Duke advanced to the semifinals for the 12th straight year.

(3) LSU 91, Mississippi 73: At North Little Rock, Ark., Seimone Augustus scored 30 points and Sylvia Fowles added 21 and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers in a quarterfinal game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Armintie Price scored 23 points for Ole Miss.

(4) Maryland 71, Georgia Tech 66: At Greensboro, N.C., Crystal Langhorne scored 20 points and Marissa Coleman 13 to lead the Terrapins to the win at the ACC tournament.

(5) Ohio State 64, Penn State 46: At Indianapolis, Brandie Hoskins scored 14 points to lead the Buckeyes in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals, their 17th straight win. The Lady Lions finished their first losing season in 33 years.

(8) Tennessee 77, Auburn 45: At North Little Rock, Ark., Candace Parker had 17 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Lady Vols into the SEC tournament semifinals.

(12) Georgia 69, (23) Vanderbilt 47: At North Little Rock, Ark., Sherill Baker scored 27 points and Cori Chambers added 20 to help the Lady Bulldogs reach the semifinals of the SEC tournament.

(14) Purdue 68, Illinois 57: At Indianapolis, Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton had 15 points and three blocks, and Aya Traore added 14 points to lead the Boilermakers in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

(16) Michigan St. 79, Iowa 58: At Indianapolis, Liz Shimek scored a career-high 31 points, and Lindsay Bowen added 12 as they traded the title of the Spartans’ career scoring leader, with Shimek now leading.

Indiana 61, (20) Minnesota 46: At Indianapolis, Nikki Smith tied her career high with 18 points and the Hoosiers’ defense stifled the Golden Gophers in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.

Kentucky 88, (23) Florida 70: At North Little Rock, Ark., Samantha Mahoney and Sarah Elliott each scored 20 points to lead the Wildcats to a victory over the Gators in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament.
